Hatch is currently seeking a highly motivated Rail Vehicle Mechanical Engineer to join our North American Infrastructure group in our Vehicle Mechanical Engineering group in our Dallas, TX office.

 

In this role, the ideal candidate must possess broad-based knowledge of rail vehicle mechanical engineering (machine design, kinematics and vehicle dynamics, vibration control, stress analysis, materials, pneumatics, hydraulics, HVAC, door systems, and equipment reliability); demonstrated skill in vehicle track interaction principles is a plus. Additional qualifications desired include experience in conducting fleet inspections, structural passenger vehicle qualification testing; knowledge of general maintenance shop practices and processes, and equipment installation in a rail or industrial environment.


The candidate must demonstrate a high work ethic; be willing to work independently or under limited instruction from senior staff or clients; be able to interact well with customer staff in a field environment; and demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills including team management, project management, multitasking, and meeting deadlines. PE registration is desirable but not required.


As the successful candidate, you will: 

  • Perform hands-on engineering work within the light rail and commuter rail, passenger rail operations, including investigations of equipment malfunctions, modifications and reporting findings.
  • Conduct fleet inspections as part of a service-life extension program.
  • Conduct forensic investigation of failed components and equipment and reporting findings.
  • Develop technical specifications for the new and upgraded train equipment and systems.
  • Review of maintenance shop layouts and management.
  • Review design submittals and prepare detailed descriptions of review findings.
  • Participate in formal design review meetings and technical working sessions.
  • Inspect and review prototype and first article equipment and prepare detailed descriptions of review findings.
  • Prepare reports that identify work progress, defects/non-conformances, and areas of concern.
  • Witness electro-mechanical equipment undergoing qualification testing, including; shock and vibration, environmental, electrical, and functional testing.
  • Participate in vehicle acceptance testing, to include ride quality, braking performance and noise/vibration levels.
  • Participate in quality assurance and manufacturing audits.
  • Provide project management and engineering support as required.
  • Provide direction and monitor the work of junior staff
  • Serve as a technical mentor and help develop staff skills
  • Take direction from Regional V.P. and high-level clients on time-sensitive and critical tasks
  • Manage project production, changes, client relations, financial management and reporting, and safety of various projects to ensure quality, client satisfaction, and profitability of projects.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to our clients, helping to deliver technically complex and cost-effective design solutions.
  • Assist in pursuits, client relationship building efforts, and building technical excellence within the group.

 

You bring to the role: 

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering 
  • 5-10 years of relevant experience with engineering and project management
  • 5-7 years of rail vehicle experience
  • Project management and staff supervision experience
  • Basic knowledge of electro-mechanical and structural engineering
  • Familiarity with mechanical engineering (Kinematics and Dynamics; Materials, Pneumatics, Hydraulics, and HVAC)
  • Excellent analytical, written, and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills, work well within a team, take direction from other senior staff members, be able to multi-task on a variety of work assignments, and meet deadlines.
  • Valid driver license (travel to various carhouses and infrastructure sites required)

 

The following skills/experience are a plus:

  • Experience with Autodesk and AutoCAD software
  • Basic programming skills
  • Experience of Finite Element (ANSYS or Equivalent) Software
