Hatch’s Smart Industries practice is looking to engage a Data Scientist Manager to service the Australia-Asia (AUA) region. The role will be based in Brisbane, one of Hatch’s Global Delivery Centre offices.   

The successful candidate will be an entrepreneurial thought manager and have demonstrated hands-on experience related to the industrial application of data analytics.  The candidate will have a proven track record of building and guiding similar teams.  The candidate will provide stewardship over refinement of the applications environment.  Further, the candidate will manage a portfolio of success in applying data analytics to industrial environments that result in study and implementation opportunities.

This role requires someone who can help clients identify the benefits of applying data analytics, understands the opportunities to use data for prediction, optimization and control across different industries.  TheManager for Data Science must create a successful environment around data engineering, data science and data analytics.

Core Functional Tasks & Key Responsibilities of this role include:

  • Build a world-class global capability in industrial data science, this will include:
    • Machine learning, cognitive computing
    • Build a Hatch point of view
    • Develop the skills of our existing team
    • Create a common architecture for development
    • Build a virtual team with others involved in this field in Hatch
    • Look for gaps and fill them
    • Coach / Mentor the data science team to further develop data analytics capabilities in Hatch
    • Develop, refine and own the tools (e.g. methodologies and frameworks) required to deliver data analytics solutions
  • Work with the Digital Leadership team to refine and implement the go to market plan for data analytics.
  • Work with all Digital Sector leaders (Mining, Infrastructure and Energy) to develop a value proposition, message and market positioning to expand into those sectors
  • Work closely with other business units and its clients to identify and develop opportunities.
  • Report regularly and proactively to the Data Analytics Sponsor and Digital Management on opportunities and projects to support hiring and investment plans as required
  • Build business
  • Serve as an energetic Digital Thought Leader in Industry and internally the field of data analytics
  • Serve as Project Manager and Sponsor for data analytics projects
  • Build a culture of collaboration with peers and partners
  • Manage relationship with key partners
  • Remain abreast of the industry, competitors and technology trends with a view to ensuring that the firm's services best align to market needs. Ensure that all alliance, acquisition and investment opportunities are considered and the most attractive, pursued.

Key required skills, experience and attributes:

  • A post graduate degree, degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering or other quantitative fields
  • Solid experience in data analytics in relevant sectors (mining, oil and gas, infrastructure or utilities) coupled with implementation of digital technology solutions
  • Very strong technical orientation to industrial data analytics
  • Expert in the development of value proposition and business cases, vision and realization roadmap strategy.
  • Excellent facilitation skills to bring alignment (break silos) between different parts of the clients organizations
  • Proven experience in successfully applying digital technologies / solutions to a very traditional working environment
  • Expertise with an agile implementation model and will have demonstrated its effective use on past projects.
  • Detailed knowledge of IT/OT and digital technology trends including IIoT, Big Data, Cloud Computing, Automation
  • Able to communicate with different levels of client organizations from COMEX to site operations
  • Business development orientation
  • Experience in working with distributed teams of professionals

Preferred Experience

  • Knowledge and experience working in statistics, machine learning, data preparation, visualisation and communication.
  • In-depth knowledge of at least one analytical tool, such as R, SAS, RapidMiner, IBM PMQ,  Python, SQL or Matlab.
  • Experience with visualisation packages in R, Python or tools such as Tableau, Excel, ability to build informative, well-designed reports and dashboards.
  • Experience with big data tools such as Spark or cloud services would be highly regarded.
  • Experience with a platform like AWS, Azure, Predix would be a huge benefit
