Title: Energy Management Specialist

Report to: Senior Director, Smart Grid & Asset Management

Summary:

This is a combined business development and project delivery position for projects within the eGrid – Power business of Hatch. The selected candidate is expected to have strong industrial sector relationships, ideally having worked for consulting/engineering firms, and in-depth experience in leading/delivering of energy management studies/plans/programs for C&I, utilities and institutional campuses.

eGrid is expanding its activities in Smart Grid & Asset Management to support clients in implementing sound energy strategies to reduce GHG, lower energy spends while maintaining power quality and reliability. In the current era of energy transition, energy management has become part of the way business is done. Many options are available, including behind-the-meter generation, recovery of waste heat, use of renewable energy and energy storage, efficient energy use, automated energy management, etc. A tailored and well-thought-through energy transition/management plan will deliver significant environmental and economic benefits – ones that will become even more desirable and sought-after as carbon pricing becomes the norm.

The Energy Management Specialist will participate in delivering projects as well as responsible for business development to capture new accounts and work in the industrial/commercial, institutional and utilities sectors. The Specialist will work within a multi-disciplinary team to lead small to medium sized projects and larger program deployment engagements.  The Specialist will contribute to position Hatch in the market as a leader in energy transition & management.

Business Development Responsibilities may include:

  • Identifying and pursuing clients requiring Energy management services in the North American markets
  • Establishing and stewarding relationships with key clients in the C&I and institutional campus sector
  • Participating (speaker, panel, keynote) to key conferences and industry association meetings, to generate new business leads and build Hatch thought leadership
  • Leading or participation in Bib/NoBid discussions for potential energy transition & management opportunities
  • Preparation of successful proposals, including value-proposition, scope of work definition and pricing
  • With support from management, legal and the commercial team, negotiate & secure contracts
  • Development of new service offerings in energy management
  • Staying informed on market developments within the energy management sector
  • Staying informed on Hatch’s broader capabilities to support projects including, but not limited to, digital, advisory, water, environmental, as well as other Hatch business segment (Mines/Metals, Infrastructure)

Project Delivery Responsibilities may include:

  • Project management
    • Prime client interface, secure repeat business
    • Coordinate activities, and those of the broader project teams, to maintain project schedules & budgets to ensure successful project completion
    • Leading as PM or supporting all delivery activities in accordance with all applicable codes and standards, including all of Hatch’s policies, processes and procedures
  • Project delivery:
    • Develop corporate-level energy management plans and energy management system, for both greenfield projects and brownfield facilities
    • Identify, measuring and verifying energy savings opportunities
    • Prepare alternative energy strategy and perform feasibility studies.
    • Develop greenhouse gas quantification and mitigation strategies.
    • Performing climate change risk assessments
    • Develop detailed energy transition/management plans and budgets
    • Lead energy design reviews to enable integration of energy management in engineering design
    • Perform deployment assistance mandates
    • Prepare monitoring/benchmarking reports
    • Collaborate in other eGrid studies and engineering jobs
  • Work alongside and support delivery of projects from other Hatch service offerings including those from Digital, Advisory, Technology, Energy, Infrastructure or Mines/Metals
  • Develop, train others to expand the team’s skills and capability                  

Specialist Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering with a relevant discipline (Electrical, Physics)
  • Post graduate degree or certificate in a related field
  • Member, Professional Engineers Ontario, or other applicable professional association
  • 8 year of experience in delivering projects in energy management, alternative energy and sustainability for industrial, commercial and institutional entities
  • Proven strong project management skills
  • Outstanding writing skills for successful Qualification statement and proposal, bids and high-quality reports
  • Certified Energy Manager/GHG Inventories accreditation
  • Familiar with the application of data analytics to asset management techniques
  • Excellent understanding of energy markets in Canada and USA
  • Good command of alternative/hybrid power, DER, microgrid technologies

Reporting to the head of the Smart Grid & Asset Management team, the position requires a high level of interpersonal communication skills, as well as demonstrated project delivery experience.  A valid driver’s license and passport is required. Occasional domestic and international travel to site locations is required.
