Mining clients are embarking on their digital transformation journey.  Fundamental elements of this transformation relate to the application of new digital technologies including Industrial Internet of Things platforms, Cloud and Edge Devices, Advanced Analytics, Digital Assets / Twins, Wearables, 3D Environments, Augmented / Virtual Reality.  These digital technologies will enable operators to support the next generation of mining operations – The Digital Mine.


The successful candidate will be an entrepreneurial thought leader with demonstrated hands-on experience in engaging mining and metals clients over technology, digitalisation and innovation.  This will involve:


  • Engaging with key client stakeholders to understand the business needs driving innovation and digitalisation
  • Synchronising business needs with overall solutions structures considering the full people, process, technology interactions necessary for successful implementations in mining across the full value chain
  • Incorporating the overall business vision and strategy and technology direction with digital strategy
  • Developing a roadmap and plan for realizing the vision and strategy for the client
  • Formulate execution plans that balance technology investment with risk and benefit thereby providing value to the client through targeted improvement in processes and operations
  • Establishing business and solution functional requirements definitions through client engagement and workshopping
  • Providing leadership for Pilot Project/Program Management that flow from the strategy piece
  • Incorporating a full discipline effort from across Hatch required for success including Change Management man
  • Development of the capabilities (functions, organization / people, processes) required by the business’ Digital Transformation Strategy in Western North America (WNA)
  • Development of partnerships with technology vendors, universities, research consortiums and/or standards and guidelines organizations as required


The candidate will have to work with clients (internal and external) to design their digital mine visions and objectives.  Working in collaboration with other Hatch colleagues, the development of implementation roadmaps will be required. The candidate will have to develop, coach and mentor high performance teams, through partnerships using internal and external resources, to support the implementation of these projects.


The candidate will need to keep up to date with technologies, develop and leverage relationships with different suppliers to understand the technologies and their application to high-value mining use cases. 


Functional Tasks

This role will form part of the Digital leadership team in Mississauga, report to the Regional Director Digital and will work to support the overall WNA and global Digital strategy.  The specific functional tasks will include:

  • Develop a plan for Development of a Digital Transformation Practice within Digital, working close with the Digital Transformation lead
  • Build an internal team to support the work
  • Lead the team’s business development and sales cycle by identifying leads, transitioning these into opportunities, formulating proposals and crafting work and project approaches
  • Remain abreast of the technology trends
  • Collaboratively engage with clients through the business requirements definition process identifying high value digitalisation use cases
  • Develop, refine and own the tools (e.g. methodologies and frameworks) required to deliver Digital Transformation projects and ensure effective consulting engagements
  • Work closely with other Hatch BU’s and its clients to support the development of opportunities
  • Take on applicable project leadership roles being responsible for the on time, on budget and on specification delivery of services and solutions
  • Serve as Digital Thought Leader in the conception and inception of Digital Asset / Twin, Digital Asset Management, Digital Supply Chain among others
  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert for the Digital BU representing it at conferences, speaking engagements, and other external industry related events
  • Manage relationship with key partners including vendors and suppliers
  • Coach / Mentor others using a hands-on approach to further develop capabilities in Hatch
  • Build a culture of collaboration with peers and partners.


Key Performance Deliverables

In light of the identified responsibilities, the following are specific deliverables that the position is designed to achieve:

  • Specific measures of performance will be discussed with and agreed upon with the successful candidate but will include
  • responsibility for the achievement of targets related to the growth of revenue in the Digital Transformation area in the WNA region primarily in the mining industry.
  • Growth of a team to support the work


Preferred Experience / Education
The following indicates specific industry, academic and functional experience/qualifications that are important to the successful achievement of the identified responsibilities and performance deliverables.

  • Bachelors Degree in a related Engineering discipline or Bachelors Degree with Honours in Computer Science or Information Technology. Masters Degree preferred.
  • Degree in Business Administration or similar
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a relevant mining discipline with at least 3 years focused on the development, specification or application of Industry 4.0 like applications in Mining or other relevant sectors
  • Working knowledge of IT/OT and digital technology trends including ICT and Telecommunication, Control & Automation, IIoT, Blockchain, Big Data, Cloud Computing, AR/VR, Automation, Operations Management and Business Systems
  • Proven experience in successfully applying digital technologies / solutions to a very traditional working environment
  • Proven business and technical consulting experience having demonstrated client engagement skills that enabled problem synthesis and solution development through targeted interactions
  • Expertise with an agile implementation model and will have demonstrated its effective use on past projects
  • Experience in working with distributed teams of professionals and in managing teams of professionals
  • Strong business development orientation is a must.
