Senior Project Engineer - Highways

Hatch is currently seeking a Senior Project Engineer to conduct and oversee highway and roadways design on our regional infrastructure and Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) projects and, as needed, coordinate design-build and P3 projects. The successful candidate will also be responsible for managing relationships with existing clients, developing our team, and pursuing new opportunities to bolster our practice.


  • Coordinate, organize and control the activities of all highway staff on a project;
  • (As required) Establish and maintain communications with MTO and other clients to ensure delivery of highway design and other project components;
  • Provide guidance of technical staff, client liaison, and technical reviews, preparation of project specifications and technical reports and solving complex engineering problems;
  • Oversee preparation of contract drawings;
  • Assist in negotiating extra work and make minor design changes;
  • Foster a spirit of enthusiasm and client focus;
  • Mentor junior and intermediate staff.


  • Must have a Civil Engineering university degree or equivalent;
  • Must be registered as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario;
  • As a minimu, must have 10 years’ experience with knowledge of current MTO standards pertaining to highway geometrics design and traffic engineering;
  • Must have experience directly related to MTO projects (relevant experience to meet MTO RAQS qualifications for any of Highway Engineering functional category would be a strong asset);
  • Sound knowledge of highway engineering and construction principles, methods and practices;
  • Demonstrated experience with project coordination and client liaison;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential;
  • Able to multi-task and meet various project deadlines.
