Interested in an entrepreneurial work environment focused on the challenges facing cities? The Urban Solutions group at Hatch is looking for an adaptable, self-motivated Graduate Student in Urban Planning, Real Estate, or Economics. We are growing our Urban Solutions practice in the NYC office and are looking to engage a talented intern for the 2018-19 academic year.

Our team focuses on strategic advisory work around large-scale planning, real estate and infrastructure projects. We do this through applying economic planning techniques and developing innovative analytical approaches to a variety of complex planning, real estate and infrastructure projects, including public-private partnerships. We also work closely with other Hatch offices around the globe – Toronto, Oakland and London – in a planning advisory capacity.

Qualified candidates will have excellent analytical and communication skills (verbal and written) with education and/or professional background in urban planning, urban economics, real estate or real estate development. The candidate must have an interest in urban planning, policy, real estate and infrastructure, with an emphasis on quantitative and analytical approaches to developing innovative solutions to complex challenges facing cities, regions, and other private, public and non-profit clients.

The role is primarily a support role for project managers and senior leaders in the group. Sample work includes:

  • Pro-formas, feasibility analyses and market studies.
  • Triple bottom line analyses for real estate and infrastructure projects.
  • Fiscal impact analyses.
  • Financing strategies for infrastructure.
  • Statistical and case study research on trends in urbanization.
  • Mapping of demographic and transportation data.
  • Desktop research, data collection, and analysis of large, disparate datasets.

Education and Skill Requirements:

  • Candidates earning a master’s degree in urban planning, real estate or an MBA with a focus on real estate, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated interest and knowledge of the principles and practices of urban planning, real estate, economic development, private public partnerships and land use planning. Experience in related fields advantageous.
  • Quantitative skills; experience with financial and economic analysis and modeling desirable.
  • Detail-oriented, a willingness to continuously learn and a desire to work in a dynamic, deadline driven team environment.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Experience using ArcGIS and/or graphic software including Adobe Creative Suite/Cloud a plus, but not necessary.
