Hatch is currently seeking a Senior Marine Engineer to join the Ports & Marine team in our Vancouver office. In this role, the candidate is expected to provide professional engineering services to effectively manage and lead a technical team of engineers in the development of marine projects.  The position will entail the development of feasibility studies, analysis and designs associated with ports and marine infrastructure, coordination with multidisciplinary teams and influence project decision to ensure marine structural considerations are addressed. 


The candidate should be experienced in the analysis and design of marine structures at conceptual, feasibility and detailed phases, condition assessments of existing marine facilities, design and implementation of retrofits, technical report writing, specifications and tender document preparation.   Experience with construction management, site engineering and project management roles is an asset.


The candidate should be adept at using Microsoft Office, SAP2000, OPTIMOOR and familiar with AutoCAD and other structural analysis packages (Staad, ABAQUS, etc). 

Key aspects of the role are further described below.


  • Serve as Project Engineer /Design Lead for marine projects
  • Perform engineering analysis, preliminary and detail design for new/rehabilitated marine facilities
  • Collect, review and analyze data to determine requirements and meet engineering objectives
  • Perform non-routine and complex assignments involving responsibility for planning and developing a complete project, relatively limited scope, or a portion of a larger and more diverse project
  • Work effectively in a multi-discipline project environment
  • Develop overall design approaches, review project documents for conformity and quality assurance, develop techniques and improve design processes, lead project team as the technical specialist
  • Undertake site visits and marine structures condition assessments
  • Preparation of technical specifications and drawing packages
  • Aid in tender document preparation
  • Coordinate work with other disciplines
  • Provide technical leadership at the project and department level
  • Mentor and support younger professionals
  • Promote and support technical excellence and quality of work  
  • Provide input to proposal efforts
  • Be aware of industry technical requirements, trends and opportunities


  • Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering
  • 8-10 years of design experience with ports, maritime, material handling projects
  • Construction experience is an asset
  • Registered P.Eng in BC or one of the Canadian provinces
  • Working knowledge of current design codes
  • Familiarity with industry standard analysis and design software
  • Demonstrated teamwork and leadership skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
