The Tailings and Mine Waste Management Practice group at Hatch is seeking to hire an experienced, industry recognized tailings practitioner to work with our existing friendly and supportive team in the Australia-Asia region. 

This role would suit a highly motivated professional with both a technical and client facing focus who is interested in supporting and nurturing the future development of the practice and expanding our capability within the Australia-Asia region.

Based in Brisbane the Tailings Lead will be joining an existing global team of specialists in tailings and mine waste management - comprising of civil, geotechnical, hydrotechnical, mining, geoscientists and process engineers. 

We are looking for someone with outstanding communication and leadership skills - as inspiring and mentoring others to do great work and business development activities (including proposal work, supporting tenders and cost estimation) to expand our industry footprint will be key components of your role.

You will have well-rounded knowledge experience and understanding of the tailings practice from managing tailings scope within pre-feasibility studies through to detailed engineering, operational support and overall governance.

Other duties and responsibilities of the role may include:

  • Coordination and management of multi-disciplinary teams to develop integrated tailings, mine waste and mine water management solutions for the selection of sites, tailings dewatering process technologies, subsurface investigation studies and laboratory tests programmes for material characterization (geotechnical and geochemical);
  • Coordination and management of multi-disciplinary teams to deliver transport and conveyance studies and final disposal including embankment design, deposition modeling, capping and closure studies, as well as surface water management, dam break analyses, flood routing to evaluate and size channels/pipes;
  • Development of material takeoffs and conceptual level CapEx and OpEx cost estimates and schedules;
  • Preparing technical documentation including reports, specifications and design basis memorandums as well as reviewing and coordinating civil designers and helping prepare engineering drawings;
  • Conduct senior reviews and technical sponsorship of key Tailings & Mine Waste Management and Closure projects in Australia-Asia within the Hatch business;

Ideally, our Tailings Lead will also possess the following skills, experience and attributes:

  • Demonstrates strong safety leadership
  • Degree qualified Civil or Geotechnical engineer with extensive experience in a tailings consulting or an operations role (preferably in the mining sector);
  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution and communication skills
  • Leadership skills with proven ability to mentor intermediate engineers, designers and technicians;
  • Experience in integrated tailings management facilities’ design, integrated mine water management design, mine closure management or mine waste geotechnical engineering;
  • Ability to travel regionally and internationally for business with a focus on Australia-Asia to support regional operations;
