Hatch are seeking Civil Construction Site Inspectors to join our project team.


Should you be a successful candidate, then you will be the authorized Hatch representative on site to oversee the civil grading works on various railway construction projects.

While working closely with a Hatch Rail Project Manager, you will be required to undertake the following duties while on site:


Monitoring / Inspecting:

  • Ensuring site safety, reporting and addressing safety concerns observed while on site.
  • Overseeing the grading contractor to ensure 100% compliance with the construction specifications and Issued For Construction drawings (IFC).
  • Observing the contractor’s compliance against the required environmental, drainage and archaeological plans.
  • Ensuring the grading work, materials, means and methods used during construction conform to all the necessary specifications and requirements.
  • Acting upon any site, contractual and regulatory infraction.


Quality Assurance:

  • Evaluating material sieves for compliance of the subgrade and subballast materials prior to and during material placement.
  • Based on a review of material testing results, ensuring the proper compaction and densities are being achieved by the Contractor.
  • Undertaking all quality assurance checks and verifications to ensure the contractor’s compliance with the grading specifications and drawings.


Record Keeping / Tracking:

  • Maintaining daily reports with photographic records of work completed.
  • Reporting, updating and tracking detailed work completion schedules and documentation.
  • Verifying the volume and quantities of grading materials used during construction.


Coordinating / Assisting:

  • Arranging survey of the surfaces and closely tracking areas that are surveyed to assist with payment under the client’s grading contract.
  • Leading weekly meetings with the client and contractor.
  • Managing administration of the construction contracts and progress payments.


Candidate Qualifications:

  • Must have comprehensive knowledge of the Canadian Occupational Health & Safety Act, and regulations for construction projects.
  • Graduate of a technical or civil engineering program will be considered as an asset.
  • Five or more years of proven experience in the inspection of large, multi-discipline or heavy civil construction projects.
  • Expertise and experience working as a civil construction inspector overseeing grading projects.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who possess an understanding of railway grading, the Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR), and experience overseeing railway construction projects.
  • Understanding of what constitutes suitable grading materials for railway grade construction.
  • Sound knowledge of construction inspection and management principles, practices and techniques, as well as knowledge of construction products, testing methods, materials and equipment.
  • Ability to understand and interpret the requirements and details of all engineering drawings, specifications and contracts.
  • Must possess sound judgment; strong organizational, administrative, observational and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to work alone while on site, in potentially semi-remote locations, for extended periods of time.
