Hatch is seeking a Tailings Hydrotechnical Engineering Co-op Student to join our Tailings and Mine Waste practice for a 4- or 8-month long work term beginning in January 2027.

As part of an integrated team of tailings specialists, you will work alongside professionals in hydrotechnical, geotechnical, process, pumping and piping engineering to support the planning, design, and operation of mine tailings and water management facilities. Reporting to a Senior Hydrotechnical Engineer in our Calgary office, you will contribute to a variety of local and international mining projects while gaining hands-on experience in hydrotechnical engineering, water management, and tailings design.

Responsibilities may include:

• Collecting, reviewing, and analyzing hydrological, meteorological, and operational data to support engineering studies and design development.
• Delineating drainage catchments and preparing water management layouts using GIS, Muk3D, and other engineering software
• Supporting the planning and design of water management infrastructure, including diversion channels, ditches, culverts, sumps, ponds, and water conveyance systems.
• Assisting with hydrologic analyses and watershed modeling using tools such as HEC-HMS.
• Assisting with hydraulic analyses, flood routing assessments, and channel design using HEC-RAS.
• Supporting the development of water balance models, technical reports, design calculations, and engineering drawings.
• Collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams to deliver innovative and sustainable solutions for mining clients.
• Participating in field investigations and site visits, including travel within Canada and, where project requirements dictate, internationally.
• Responsibilities may require a willingness and ability to travel to remote locations and work in field environments.

Education and Experience:

• Currently enrolled in a Civil, Environmental, or Water Resources Engineering program at an accredited university
• Strong interest in hydrotechnical, water resources, geotechnical, or mining engineering
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Experience using engineering and data analysis software is considered an asset
• Familiarity with hydrotechnical software such as HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, GIS, or similar tools is considered an asset
• Previous co-op, research, or project experience related to water resources, mining, tailings, or environmental engineering is considered an asset
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in collaborative, multidisciplinary teams.

Compensation: 

Range: $26.00 - $33.00

Your individual compensation within this range will depend on factors such as skills, experience, qualifications and location.
