Hatch is currently seeking a highly motivated Instrumentation & Control Engineer to join our team in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

As part of our Project Delivery Group, you will contribute to challenging, multidisciplinary projects while working alongside experienced engineers, designers and project professionals. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys combining technical design, automation and controls expertise with hands-on project and site involvement.

Depending on the size and complexity of the project, you will work closely with the Project Manager and/or Control and Automation Lead Engineer and may take responsibility for instrumentation and controls engineering deliverables throughout the project lifecycle.

You will also have the opportunity to support and mentor junior engineers and designers while collaborating with senior technical specialists across Hatch.

 

Responsibilities / About the Role

In this role, you will:

  • Provide technical and engineering support throughout all phases of project delivery, from early planning and design through construction and commissioning.
  • Support the delivery of project requirements related to scope, cost, schedule and quality.
  • Prepare technical documentation, specifications, reports and other engineering deliverables required for project execution.
  • Coordinate and monitor engineering activities in accordance with project scope, schedule, procedures and quality requirements.
  • Develop Functional Control Specifications and support the programming and configuration of control systems.
  • Contribute to instrumentation, controls and automation design.
  • Review drawings, vendor documentation and shop drawings to ensure alignment with engineering designs and project requirements.
  • Participate in and witness Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs).
  • Monitor fabrication and construction activities following the award of contracts and purchase orders to ensure work is executed in accordance with engineering designs and specifications.
  • Support site, construction and commissioning activities as required.
  • Identify technical issues and assist with the development and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Coordinate instrumentation and controls activities with other engineering disciplines.
  • Review engineering work for quality and compliance with project procedures and quality assurance requirements.
  • Support engineering progress reporting and provide regular updates on assigned engineering work packages.
  • Provide technical guidance, support and mentorship to junior engineers and designers.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers, project teams and clients to successfully deliver project requirements.

 

Education and Qualifications

We are looking for someone with:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited university.
  • 7+ years of relevant engineering experience, ideally within consulting, heavy industrial, mining or multidisciplinary project environments.
  • Experience in instrumentation, control and automation design and/or consulting.
  • Registration, or eligibility for registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick (APEGNB).
  • Demonstrated hands-on site experience and the ability to work effectively in both office and field environments.
  • Experience with PLC/DCS programming, with Rockwell experience preferred; DeltaV and ABB experience would be considered assets.
  • Experience developing control philosophies, functional descriptions and/or functional control specifications.
  • Knowledge and experience with data-centric engineering and design systems.
  • Experience with SmartPlant Instrumentation or similar platforms would be considered an asset.
  • AutoCAD experience; MicroStation experience would be considered an asset.
  • Strong technical problem-solving skills and the ability to take initiative.
  • The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good planning and organisational skills.
  • The ability to delegate tasks and provide guidance to junior team members.
  • A strong commitment to safety and quality.
  • Willingness to travel and support project and site activities as required.
