Senior / Specialist Control & Automation Engineer
 

Summary
The incumbent is a Senior Control, Automation and Instrumentation (C&A) Engineer, with experience obtained in an industrial control, automation and instrumentation and multi-disciplinary engineering project environment in the mining / minerals processing / oil & gas / power / infrastructure sectors, including all aspects of the Project Life Cycle.The Senior C&A Engineer is responsible for supervising a team of C&A engineers and designers, providing leadership and assistance in the resolution of all technical issues related to the discipline on a project, and act as discipline consultant to projects teams and clients. In addition, the Senior C&A Engineer defines and develops the plan to meet project requirements and manages the team of engineers and designers to achieve the expected results in terms of quality, cost and schedule.
The incumbent has a successful project delivery track record involving C&A systems which range from C&I functional and architecture designs, detailed C&I designs, control system software development and integration, effective integration of C&I solutions into clients’ operating systems and environments, managing of large C&I implementation projects, and plant commissioning.
The Senior C&A Engineer will be part of a multi-disciplinary project team in a large EPC/M project environment and will assume full responsibility for the project’s C&I discipline and all types of engineering work including developing solutions, studies, planning, estimating, design and calculations, specifications and data sheets, peer reviews and checking.
On single-discipline C&A projects, the incumbent will assume overall responsibility for business development, client engagement, project planning, setup and management, consultation, team leadership, and discipline specific project delivery.
The success of the role is directly related to the ability of the incumbent to investigate client requests and develop/define the scope of work (plan, schedule and strategy), and carry the clear responsibility and accountability for delivery of the project goals as set down by the client.
The Senior C&A Engineer is also responsible for providing technical resolution to construction and commissioning queries, as well as participation in construction supervision, testing and commissioning. The role may require time spent at the client’s operational and construction sites, imposing the requirement for travel and time spent away from the home office.

Key Responsibilities

Develop a thorough understanding of the project requirements as they relate to scope, schedule and cost

Assist in the preparation and development of project specific procedures

Define the C&A system requirements to achieve the project results and monitor effectiveness

Prepare a list of engineering deliverables and time-based functions to facilitate the planning and control of the engineering budget

Develop the C&A work plan for insertion into the project specific execution plan

Develop and maintain the project scope of work documentation and revisions as required during the design evolution

Manage and review the Engineering Work Packages (EWP) associated with all deliverables and time-based functions to ensure that budgets and schedules are being met, and take corrective action if necessary

Assign work tasks (via approved engineering work packages) to individuals and continuously monitor progress and quality, including remotely located design teams

Review and approve the C&A engineering and design standards

Review and approve the C&A and layout design criteria documents

Review and approve C&A technical deliverables (design criteria, calculations, study reports, specifications, datasheets, drawings, etc.), and provide professional sign-off where required

Represent the C&A discipline in project engineering coordination meetings

Schedule, coordinate and participate in C&A design reviews

Ensure coordination, between the C&A team and other disciplines, of all activities being performed as the design evolves

Ensure that quality audits of engineering work are carried out in accordance with project procedures and the quality assurance plan

Promote and maintain the application of ethical and professional practices in the execution of C&A engineering work

Ensure that all work designed, manufactured and supplied in the C&A engineering discipline complies with the relevant sections of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)

Participation in the compilation of the client Project Safety Management Plan with specific reference to switching, isolation and lockout procedures

Prepare engineering bid documentation and perform technical evaluation and recommendation of bids

Monitor the fabrication and construction work to ensure that it is executed in accordance with the engineering designs. Witness Factory / Site Acceptance Tests

Monitor control software development work to ensure that it is executed in accordance with the engineering designs and appropriate development lifecycle requirements

 

Qualifications and Experience

BSc/B Eng or B Tech Degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering

Registration as a Professional Engineer with an approved engineering council or other region equivalent

 

Preferred

Post graduate qualification in Electrical or Electronic Engineering

 

Experience

Minimum 10 years’ relevant experience

Experience working in a multi-disciplinary environment on large projects in the mining, mineral processing, oil & gas, power, infrastructure sectors and/or heavy industrial projects

Control System design and delivery, preferably in a diverse set of roles (e.g. engineer, designer, software programmer, commissioning engineer)

Plant and process functional designs, HAZOP participation, functional control specification development

Control system architecture designs and control system detailed designs

Instrumentation design

C&I Cabling designs 

Knowledge of:

    • Modern industrial control systems (PLC/DCS/SCADA)

    • Data Historians

    • Modern industrial communications networks and technologies, including wireless networking.

    • Modern industrial instrumentation.

Computer aided design, including C&I computer-based design tools

Familiar with formal software engineering standards and approaches.

Sound understanding of regulations, design codes and technical standards

Technical exposure to the latest control system technologies

Strong deliverable focus and ability to plan the work

A high degree of understanding of interdisciplinary dependencies related to the discipline

Extensive experience in the use of procedures and workflows in the execution of projects

Strong ability to delegate tasks and promote the effective performance of team members

Good understanding of procurement, contracting and commissioning methodologies

Ability to manage individuals to attain quality, cost and schedule objectives

Well-developed communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills

Experience in mentoring young professionals


Preferred

Project management and engineering management

Understanding of Hatch HSEC policy and standards

Experience in engineering and designs on underground mining projects

C&A designs for hazardous / flammable environments, and associated equipment selection

Experience in Level 3 C&A systems e.g. manufacturing execution systems, energy management systems, advanced process control and data analytics

Experience in electrical engineering designs

Good understanding of Hatch systems and workflows as they relate to the C&A practice

Extensive knowledge of Hatch’s 3D data centric design systems

Extensive knowledge of Hatch’s engineering management systems

Understanding of functional safety and safety systems
