The Senior Civil Engineer will provide technical expertise and deliver civil engineering solutions for multi-disciplinary projects, ensuring successful execution across Hatch’s three sectors: Metals, Energy, and Infrastructure. The role combines technical excellence with strong coordination responsibilities, client engagement, and mentoring junior staff while supporting project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Technical
- Perform conceptual and detailed civil engineering design for earthworks, roads, drainage systems, utilities, and site development.
- Prepare engineering calculations, technical specifications, reports, and tender documentation.
- Participate in design reviews and provide input to cost estimates and schedules.
- Ensure compliance with design codes, standards, and safety-in-design principles.
Coordination & Client Engagement
- Coordinate civil engineering activities across disciplines to ensure integrated project delivery.
- Represent the civil discipline in project coordination meetings and liaise with clients, contractors, and authorities.
- Prepare Engineering Work Packages (EWPs) and support task assignments.
- Assist with proposal development and client engagement to support business growth.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers and designers to foster technical excellence and collaboration.
- Assist the Engineering Manager in meeting project scope, cost, and schedule requirements.
Quality & Safety
- Review and evaluate technical work prepared by engineers, designers, and technologists.
- Ensure adherence to project procedures and standards.
- Provide site support and timely response to technical queries during construction.
- Work to ensure the implementation of safety in design and integrity principles in design documentation.
Performance Expectations
- Deliver high-quality civil engineering designs within agreed timelines and budgets.
- Ensure effective coordination across disciplines and maintain strong client satisfaction.
- Actively mentor junior staff and contribute to knowledge sharing initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution.
- 10+ years of civil engineering design and project coordination experience.
- Proficiency in Civil3D and familiarity with design standards.
- Strong communication, planning, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
- Commitment to safety and quality.
Preferred
- Professional/Chartered Engineer registration.
- Experience in infrastructure projects (roads, drainage, utilities).
- Familiarity with BIM processes and GIS tools.
- Project Management certification (e.g., PMP).
Additional Information
- Reports to: Engineering Manager.
- Location: Johannesburg.
- Travel: Occasional travel to project sites and other offices.
- Collaboration: Work closely with civil, hydrotechnical, and geotechnical teams.
