Signal and Train Control Engineer
Location: Los Angeles, CA

Hatch is seeking experienced Signal and Train Control engineers in several offices across the US. The ideal candidates should have 5 or more years of relevant experience including design, installation, signal system testing, and operation and maintenance of railroad and/or rail transit signal systems. Desirable design experience includes signal and train control systems, block design, Automatic Train Control, PTC, microprocessor and relay-based interlockings, and highway crossing warning systems. Candidates must be skilled in the preparation of contract drawings, specifications, cost estimating, field verification, inspection and testing (FRA & Transit). Project Management experience and a Professional Engineer license are a plus.
We are seeking a results-driven engineering professional with excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work well in a team environment. Candidates must be detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills, the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and maintaining a high level of quality, as well as the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Working background with DC Coded Track Circuits, AF Track Circuits, Crossing Predictors, MicroLok(R) and VPI/ iVPI(R) Vital/Non-Vital Interlocking Processors preferred. SATS or Vital-Sim simulation experience is an advantage.
Responsibilities can include, but are not limited to:
- Prepare signal system-related drawings (Route and Aspect, Track and Signal, Typical Circuits, etc.)
- Develop detailed designs for signaling and grade crossing systems, including circuits and application logic
- Perform block designs based on train performance criteria, product specifications, and train schedule headway and run time analysis
- Review design documentation on behalf of the railroad, ensuring design compliance with contract requirements, standards, and best practices
- Perform field inspections, report drafting and signal testing assistance. Oversee factory and field testing of signal equipment
- Develop specifications, technical requirements, cost and material estimates
- Plan, oversee, and manage signal work performed by a contractor or supplier
- Work with clients and incorporate their signal requirements into Contract Documents
Skills and Attributes:
- Ability to read circuit diagrams, relay logic, and Boolean/software logic programs
- Familiarity with railroad engineering drawings, such as track plans, control lines, and cable plans and general civil engineering information
- Fluency with basic computer applications such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and PDF tools. Experience with CAD tools such as MicroStation or Autocad is a plus
- Robust technical and critical thinking skills
- Experience with project management, including estimating, work planning, and schedule evaluation beneficial
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to work as part of a distributed team
- Able to work effectively with minimal supervision
- Experience with Block Design, PTC, and/or CBTC is highly desirable
Qualifications:
- BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field of study
- 5+ years of experience in design, commissioning, or operation and maintenance of rail signal systems
- Experience with diverse types of signal systems is desirable
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) preferred
