Hatch has earned an international reputation as a leading design consultant in the mining and metallurgical fields and has been involved in the infrastructure component of major mining and industrial projects around the world for over 60 years. We offer clients a complete package of services that can address the requirements of the total gateway logistics, operational environment and its associated infrastructure. Whilst maintaining its strong foundation in freight rail, Hatch is now rapidly expanding into passenger rail in Australian leveraging its strong global capability.


Due to further growth within the Infrastructure sector, Hatch is seeking to appoint an experienced Rail Director to manage our Australia-Asia based freight and passenger rail engineering operations.


Based out of the Hatch Melbourne CBD office, we are looking for someone who can ‘hit the ground running’ to oversee our current rail projects and further expand our market share of rail work in Australia and Asia. Ideal candidates will be highly regarded within the field and known for both their technical and interpersonal skills. Your interest and passion in successfully and sustainably growing and managing business should be self-evident.

At Hatch we take pride in always doing our homework and acting like owners to ensure cost effective, efficient delivery. Your technical expertise will be required to provide specialist advisory support and sponsorship to various project teams working on public transport and heavy haul infrastructure projects.


Other core responsibilities of your role (whilst not inclusive) will include:


  • Providing strategic rail advice, services and support to approvals requirements to projects and clients
  • Contributing to and driving rail-related bids, proposals and presentations for various clients and internal groups
  • People-related responsibilities across the entire span of the employment lifecycle (e.g. hiring, career development, succession planning)
  • Working with multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop design criteria for projects
  • Developing project schedules for the delivery of rail infrastructure services on projects
  • Performing project risk assessments and communicating results to project teams
  • Managing various reporting requirements of the Rail group throughout Australia and Asia


Key skills, experience and attributes:


  • Heavy freight and passenger rail expertise; with experience in light rail considered an advantage
  • A proven portfolio of business development success either in a consulting capacity or within a recognised engineering and/or construction firm
  • Extensive recent experience in delivering rail, infrastructure and transportation activities on major public infrastructure projects
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and managing a multi-disciplinary team of professionals in the delivery of major projects for a diverse client base
  • Experience preparing and delivering business development strategies


Suitable candidates will be degree qualified, hold CPEng/RPEQ and possess current working rights in Australia (i.e. permanent residency).
