The Opportunity

Hatch is seeking a Lead Architect to provide design leadership in the planning and delivery of complex transit operations, maintenance, and storage facilities, including rail depots, workshops, operational yards, and bus maintenance and storage facilities (bus garages), supporting both conventional and zero-emission fleets.

This role is focused on integrating architectural design, operational functionality, and multidisciplinary coordination to deliver high-performing, future-ready facilities. You will lead the development of design concepts and guide projects through all phases—from early planning and programming through detailed design, construction, and commissioning.

As a key design authority, you will collaborate closely with engineering, rail systems, operations, and client teams to ensure facilities are efficient, safe, maintainable, and aligned with user workflows and lifecycle requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Architectural Design Leadership

  • Lead architectural planning and design of transit maintenance facilities, including depots, workshops, inspection buildings, and support spaces
  • Develop space programming, adjacencies, and functional layouts aligned with operational workflows
  • Balance design considerations including functionality, constructability, maintainability, and lifecycle performance
  • Oversee architectural deliverables across all design phases (concept through detailed design)
  • Guide and mentor multidisciplinary teams to deliver coordinated design solutions

Facility Planning & Functional Design

  • Plan and optimize facility layouts for complex operational environments, including maintenance, inspection, cleaning, and storage activities
  • Design for efficient circulation of people, vehicles, and equipment within industrial facilities
  • Ensure alignment between facility design and operational requirements such as capacity, workflows, and safety
  • Plan and design bus maintenance and storage facilities, including layouts supporting circulation, dispatch, cleaning, fueling, and charging operations
  • Incorporate planning considerations for bus fleet operations, including vehicle flow, dwell times, staging, and yard logistics

Multidisciplinary Coordination

  • Lead coordination between architecture, structural, mechanical, electrical, and rail systems disciplines
  • Collaborate with rail and operations specialists to integrate facility design with rolling stock and operational concepts
  • Ensure seamless integration of building systems, utilities, and equipment into the overall facility design
  • Coordinate design inputs related to bus systems, including fueling infrastructure, electric vehicle charging systems, and maintenance support systems

Sustainability & Building Performance

  • Incorporate sustainable and energy-efficient design principles into industrial facilities
  • Support development of environmentally responsible solutions aligned with project and client goals
  • Integrate considerations such as ventilation, lighting, energy use, and environmental control systems
  • Support integration of zero-emission bus infrastructure, including electric charging systems, hydrogen fueling, and associated facility requirements

Project Delivery & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Contribute to project delivery across various models (Design-Build, PPP, Alliance, etc.)
  • Support technical coordination during procurement, contractor engagement, and design reviews
  • Interface with clients, operators, and project stakeholders to align design solutions with requirements
  • Provide input during construction, commissioning, and handover phases
  • Engage with clients and stakeholders on bus fleet transition strategies, including implications for facility planning, design, and operations

Safety, Compliance & Quality

  • Ensure designs comply with applicable building codes, standards, and safety requirements
  • Support safety reviews, risk identification, and mitigation strategies
  • Promote best practices in industrial facility design and delivery

Qualifications

Education

  • Degree in Architecture (preferred)
  • Registration as a licensed Architect in Canada (OAA or eligible) is highly desirable

Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in architectural design of complex industrial, infrastructure, or transportation facilities
  • Experience with maintenance facilities, depots, logistics centres, aviation facilities, or similar operational environments
  • Transit, rail, and bus project experience is required
  • Experience delivering projects across multiple phases, including design and construction
  • Familiarity with multidisciplinary coordination in large-scale projects

Technical Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong expertise in facility planning, space programming, and functional design
  • Experience with complex building typologies and operational environments
  • Knowledge of building systems integration (MEP, structural coordination)
  • Understanding of constructability, maintainability, and lifecycle design principles
  • Familiarity with relevant building codes and standards
  • Understanding of bus fleet operations and facility requirements, including conventional and zero-emission (electric and hydrogen) systems

Leadership & Professional Skills

  • Strong design leadership and problem-solving capability
  • Ability to communicate complex design concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Collaborative mindset with experience working in multidisciplinary teams
  • Proven ability to lead projects and act as a trusted design authority

Working Conditions

  • Office-based with periodic site visits
  • Participation in design reviews, client meetings, and coordination workshops
  • Occasional travel to project sites or client locations may be required
