Title: Climate Change Engineer Trainee - Mississauga
Position Summary:
Hatch’s Climate Change Business Practice is seeking an Engineer Trainee with interest in climate change, decarbonization and climate technologies,. Reporting to one of the Leads of our Climate Change Business Practice, you will support projects locally and globally based out of our Mississauga Head Office location. The Climate Change Engineer Trainee will be part of a multi-disciplinary team delivering engineered solutions to combat climate change including process electrification, green hydrogen, carbon capture, carbon dioxide removal including direct air capture, biomass, biochar and biofuels. The role will require a deep understanding of carbon and energy usage in complex industrial processes to develop decarbonization solutions across various process and energy systems, unit operations, and equipment.

Responsibilities:
- Assist in studies for various climate change and decarbonization related engagements, including projects involving new climate-related technologies and processes.
- Preparation of design calculations, documentation and development of equipment calculations and technical specifications for a wide range of mechanical equipment.
- Evaluate low-emission process alternatives and/or equipment/technology selection through trade-off studies.
- Evaluate materials of construction (MOC) for various pieces of mechanical equipment (electrolyzers, air contactors, heat exchangers, agitators, pumps, tanks, process piping, etc.)
- Participate in equipment design reviews and plant layout development, risk assessments including climate risk assessments.
- Perform mechanical equipment sizing and provide input to drawings, prepare process equipment data sheets and specifications including technical details and duties as required.
- Ensuring the mechanical process equipment specifications portray the appropriate information and process design intent.
- Participate in process hazard review studies (HAZID/HAZOP)
- Prepare technical reports and presentations.
- Working with the project team to provide input to capital and operating cost estimates.
- Liaise with clients, equipment suppliers/vendors, contractor representatives, and/or project personnel as necessary to assist with meeting key project deliverables.
- Develop GHG profiles, and mapping and modeling of energy and GHG emissions
- Complete calculations and develop documentation related to GHG abatement assessments and decarbonization studies .
- Contribute to techno-economic assessments of Low-Emission Process Alternatives and/or Equipment/Technology Selection trade-off studies
- Contribute to development of block flow diagrams, process flow diagrams and associated mass and energy balances
- Contribute to capital and operating cost estimates.
- Prepare and review technical reports and presentations.
- Contribute to preparation of proposals and other business development initiatives.
Education and Experience:
- Must be working towards graduating in 2025, or recently graduated, with Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering degree.
- Excel academically while being actively involved in extra-curricular and/or volunteer activities at school or in the community.
- Previous coop or summer work terms within a process or mechanical engineering team is an asset.
- Academic or work experience with mechanical equipment design related to complex industrial processes.
- Willingness and ability to travel to project sites including remote sites
