Title: Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Specialist

Reports to: Senior Director, Smart Grid & Asset Management

Job Description:

Summary: This is a career growth opportunity for someone with DER experience who is looking for increased exposure to the delivery & implementation of advisory, studies, and owner’s engineering delivery phase projects. The candidate is expected to have utility sector experience, ideally having worked at a consulting or advisory firm familiar with transmission/distribution utility challenges. They should have experience either leading or providing significant contributions to the development and/or implementation of DER integration programs at transmission or distribution utilities.  Additionally, the position requires a solid understanding of the transitioning power sector, and the roles and responsibilities of the key sector stakeholders such as regulations, regional transmission operators (RTOs) and both regulated and non-regulator utilities. 

Hatch is expanding activities in the Smart Grid & Asset Management sector advising utilities on the impacts of integrating intermittent distributed generation and energy storage systems.  The increased deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs) has provided additional complexities and challenges for utilities as they transition from a monodirectional model of providing electricity to a complex, digital, data intensive, prosumer driven, decentralized model.  With technological advancements (e.g. smart meters, automatic feeders, smart inverters, integrated asset management and advanced data analytical models that incorporate artificial intelligence) and emerging business models (community microgrids, transactive rate-based prosumer models, etc..) that are changing the industry.

Team: The Smart Grid & Asset Management team has supported the integration of intermittent generation technologies, conducted impact assessments & location optimization of energy storage systems, developed roadmaps for the deployment of advanced asset management systems, and continues to advice utilities on how to leverage emerging technologies in their capital planning programs. 

Position: The DER Technical Specialist (“Specialist”) will participate in delivering projects and business development activities to capture new accounts and work in the commercial & industrial (C&I), utilities & institutional campuses. The Specialist will work within a multi-disciplinary team to lead small to medium sized projects and support larger DER Integration and analytics advisory and delivery engagements.  The Specialist will continue to position Hatch in the market as a leader in the energy transition & management.

Project Delivery Responsibilities may include: 

While participating in and/or leading billable project activities, the Specialist will:

  • Perform studies, assessments, and engineering work as per project budget and schedule:
    • Solve challenging problems pertaining to integrating DERs with grid modernization plans, and clearly articulating how DERs can benefit client’s operations in terms of reliability, economic payback and resiliency. 
    • Drive the planning & delivery of asset integration systems for electric utilities with increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs), integrating data analytics and other optimization software platforms to improve the client’s customer relationship, and return on invested capital
  • Either lead (as project manager) or support delivery activities in accordance with all applicable codes and standards, including all of Hatch’s policies and procedures such as Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance, Quality Control, and progress and financial reporting
  • Support the identification and selection of potential vendor partners
  • Work alongside and support delivery of projects from other Hatch service offerings including those from Hatch’s Digital, Advisory, Technology, Energy, and/or Infrastructure businesses
  • Be open to knowledge sharing within the team on best practices, and actively contribute such knowledge in team and project discussions

Business Development Responsibilities may include: 

For a portion of the Specialists time, business development activities will be performed, including:

  • Identifying and pursuing clients planning to integrate DERs within North American & the Caribbean
  • Working with the marketing team to establish / update marketing & client facing materials, as applicable
  • Leading or participation in Bid/NoBid discussions for potential opportunities
  • Leading or supporting the creation of proposal documents, including scope, schedule & budget estimates

Special Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering with a relevant discipline (electrical, systems, physics)
  • Post graduate degree or certificate in a related field is preferred
  • Professional Engineer status, or other applicable professional association
  • 5 to 8 years of overall professional experience, largely in a consulting, advisory, or front-end study position
  • 3 to 5 years of experience with the application of advanced analytics to recognize patterns and extract actionable recommendations from data
  • Client-facing presentation experience, ideally with a business development responsibility
  • Knowledge of industry leading technologies in all industrial DER categories, including, but not limited to energy storage, solar PV, demand response, EV charging, and Virtual Power Plants (VPPs)
  • Experience with system optimized planning & utilization, asset evaluation & selection, development, asset GIS tagging & tracking, maintenance planning, and ultimate disposal or renewal of utility assets
  • Understand the challenges utilities are facing with increasing DER penetration and can describe alternate business models that utilities are considering, piloting, or have recently deployed.

Reporting to the head of the Smart Grid & Asset Management team, the position requires a high level of interpersonal communication skills and demonstrated project delivery experience.  A valid driver’s license and passport is required. Occasional domestic and international travel to site locations is required.
