Hatch is currently seeking a highly motivated Electrical Utility Design Specialist with expertise in electrical utility infrastructure and joint use make-ready designs.
Our team consists of highly specialized electrical & communication, grid modernization, and electrification engineers and technologists focused on supporting electric utilities with the deployment of emerging technologies for smart grid projects across the electric sector.
This challenging position involves working as part of a highly specialized team focused on planning and design of electrical, automation, protection, and communications systems for electric utility across North America. The position will have a particular near-term focus to support Ontario utilities with the review and deployment of Joint Use (JU) Internet Service Providers (ISP) designs on shared transmission and distribution infrastructure.
As the successful candidate, you will:
• Review, comment on, and provide feedback on the designs of JU applications to install ISP assets on collocated utility transmission and distribution infrastructure
• Review interconnection diagrams, cable schedules, single line diagrams, general arrangement drawings and grounding/earthing, lighting/services designs.
• Ensure all drawings and deliverables are checked to comply with client utility standards
• Review and comment on designs ensuring compliance with the applicable electrical design criteria
• Supervise the work of junior designers assigned to the projects.
• Lead the planning of, and/or participate in field surveys of client assets
• Developing, issuing, and maintaining work permits for issuance following the acceptance of submitted applications. Ensure permits are closed and as-built / as-installed documentation is accurate and recorded for future reference.
You bring to the role:
• 7+ years of experience in utility electrical design, with a strong preference for experience with Ontario transmission and distribution utilities, or engineering/design firms supporting such utilities
• Proficient with utility pole loading calculations and related software (eg. SpidaCalc, PLSCADD, O-Calc, etc.)
• Proficient with project management and document control tools (eg. ProjectWise, SAP, Primavera, etc.)
• Strong knowledge of Ontario Electric Safety Code, Ontario Reg. 22/04, and applicable CSA standards is expected
• Strong knowledge of third party / Joint Use attachment requirements to utility transmission & distribution infrastructure
• Knowledge of all types of distribution level voltage electrical equipment, and familiarity with field inspection safety requirements while working around such electrical assets
• Knowledge of Internet Service Provider (ISP) assets
• Knowledge of control systems and instrumentation design
• Preference for a Certified Engineering Technologist designation
• Preference for experience designing, reviewing, and checking combined civil and electrical utility infrastructure such as for utility relocations, Joint Use applications, and pole/tower foundations
• Experience applying for, issuing, working with, and/or closing out work permits for various type of services on distribution system assets
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Outstanding site / field safety awareness is required
