Engineering Management is a Hatch global practice within the Project Delivery Group (PDG) providing management, technical leadership, and world-class design expertise to a wide variety of Hatch's commodity-based business practices. Our capability spans through the whole project lifecycle comprising; scoping, conceptual design, pre-feasibility, feasibility studies, detailed engineering, procurement, construction support, commissioning and project management. Engineering Management supports all of Hatch’s business units, namely, energy, metals, and infrastructure.

Our Mississauga team is currently seeking a dedicated Engineering Manager to lead project work both in the office, and in the field.  The Engineering Manager is responsible for engineering and design matters on the project and assists the Project Manager. The Engineering Manager will fill three main roles during the execution of a project. These are: 

  • Manager 
  • Technical Leader 
  • Communicator 

    The Engineering Manager on a project is responsible for scope definition and manages the planning, resourcing and scheduling, and progress measurement of all engineering related activities. In addition, the Engineering Manager provides technical leadership, fosters communication, and integrates the disciplines and resolves issues. 

    The Engineering Manager is responsible to ensure setup and use of engineering systems, and, the delivery of all technical deliverables to achieve the project objectives within the specified timeframe and budget. 

Key Responsibilities

The Engineering Manager has the following key responsibilities:

Setup

  • Ensure the multi-disciplined scope of work is developed, documented, and an effective change management system is in place.
  • Review and approve the project’s facility description document which describes the scope of the facilities.
  • Contribute to the development of the Project Execution Plan (PEP) together with the project leadership team (including procurement, project controls, construction, and commissioning), and allocate roles and responsibilities.
  • Develop the project procedures manual applicable to the scope of work, project phase, and client requirements.
  • Develop the engineering budget to meet the scope and execution plan for the project.
  • Develop the engineering work packages (EWPs) for all deliverables and time-based functions.
  • Develop an achievable engineering schedule to meet project requirements using the EWPs.
  • Develop the engineering manpower plan to meet the engineering schedule with the Project Manager.
  • Ensure the applicable engineering design tools applicable to the project are setup and workflows are established for the project.
  • Ensure that training is planned, budgeted and implemented for resources assigned to the project.

Execution and Control

  • Ensure the baseline documents (scope description, budgets, EWPs, deliverables lists, execution plan, procedure manual, resource plan, and schedule) are maintained and updated throughout the lifecycle of the project.
  • Actively manage engineering progress through analysis of earned value, cost-performance, and schedule performance metrics
  • Ensure that the engineering forecast is regularly updated.
  • Provide input into the project monthly report with respect to design progress, cost and issues of concern and recommend changes if required to achieve overall objectives.
  • Coordinate with Procurement, Construction and Commissioning personnel early in the design effort to obtain their input and conduct any necessary reviews.
  • Make contact with client management at key points throughout project to ensure that engineering deliverables are meeting client requirements.
  • Regularly review and appraise the structure of the engineering project team in terms of its ability to meet short- and long-term objectives, and institute appropriate changes.
  • Assume responsibility for the engineering administrative function, directing Area Engineers, Discipline Engineers and other groups engaged in inter-related engineering responsibilities.
  • Direct and review the engineering activities to ensure that work quality is satisfactory and appropriate technical personnel development programs are conducted.
  • Raise safety awareness and ensure the design for safety principles are applied to the project.
  • Ensure engineering risk assessments and HAZOPs are carried out and all identified issues are addressed.
  • Arrange and facilitate design reviews and participate as required in engineering, management and construction reviews.
  • Coordinate quality audit verifications to ensure compliance with all relevant engineering standards and internal procedures for all design activities. Instigate corrective actions as required.
  • Cooperate with the Global Engineering practice of other Regions as directed on matters involving sharing of available expertise.

    Close-Out

  • Prepare and analyze engineering performance metrics on a multi-discipline basis.  Feedback into the organization.
  • Develop lessons learned lists, documentation, and feedback into the organization.
  • Assist the project manager and project controls manager in preparing a project close-out report.

Qualifications and Experience

  • BSc/BEng degree in an engineering discipline required
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer with PEO advantageous
  • Typically 10+ years of experience in a multi-disciplinary environment on major projects with specific focus on mining and mineral processing, oil and gas, thermal or nuclear, water, or other infrastructure projects.  Experience in multiple sectors advantageous but not specifically required.
  • Typically 3+ years’ experience in managing design engineering teams working on major projects required.
  • An extensive technical knowledge of engineering systems, design, applications of engineering processes and materials, and engineering applications of current engineering technologies.  Specific design tool platform not required (Intergraph, Bentley, AutoCAD, etc)
  • General knowledge of industry, regulatory standards and design criteria in engineering disciplines.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and organize at an advanced level.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of project planning and understanding of multi-discipline interdependencies.
  • Knowledge of drawing production and document control methodologies.
  • Knowledge of engineering progress assessment, earned value, and engineering control strategies.
  • Ability to adapt to constant change and accommodate high pressure situations to support the team in meeting project objectives.
  • An extensive knowledge of administrative practices and strong communication skills across all levels including client representatives.
  • Ability to handle complex problem-solving tasks, applying appropriate analysis and consideration of high level technical detail.
  • Ability to manage relationships with key stakeholders involved in the project (including internal and external clients).
  • Possess a high emotional quotient (EQ) that can be applied to motivate teams, increase team efficiency, and aid on conflict resolution.
