Scope of Position

The mining, infrastructure and energy sectors are coming to terms with the use of new Digital Technologies to improve and even transform their businesses.  Fundamental to this is the use of data to solve real world problems from system availability and OEE, to decision support systems that address process variability and asset integrity and advanced process control systems powered by machine learning and other forms of Artificial Intelligence (AI). All of these applications hold the promise of transitioning our clients from people-intensive to a data- and algorithm-intensive industries.  Within Hatch Digital, we are aggressively building a business that supports clients to better achieve this goal through the application of a broad range of “industrial mathematical” techniques; data analytics, AI and Machine Learning (ML) to provide broad ranging decision support capabilities for our clients.  Our offerings cover the spectrum from business consulting to the supply of bespoke solutions (including software packages).  Our decision support teams work in concert with other Hatch Digital teams and our 9000 global subject matter experts to improve insights and outcomes through the application of data.  Currently, we are seeking a Global Lead for our global decision support teams – to take us to the next level.

The successful candidate will be an entrepreneurial and collaborative thought leader with demonstrated hands-on experience related to the industrial application of data analytics, AI and ML.  As the Advanced Decision Support Leader, you will not only help our clients solve their toughest challenges, but you will also build a strong, global team of world class, client-focused industrial mathematicians. You will have a proven track record of building and leading similar teams.  You will excel at discovering, designing and developing analytical methods to support novel approaches to data and information processing including the development of machine learning algorithms.  You will be comfortable with the generation and testing of working hypotheses and will be expert at the preparation and analysis of historical data to identify patterns and trends. You will also provide advice for the ongoing development of Hatch’s cloud-based Knowledge-as-a-Service platform and will support the development of analytical applications for this environment. Further, you will have responsibility for the management and oversight of a portfolio of successful projects focused on the application of data analytics to industrial challenges.


The Practice Lead role requires someone who can help clients identify the benefits of applying data analytics, understands the opportunities to use data for prediction, optimization and control across different industries.  You will leverage other Hatch capabilities, to successfully and completely tackle industry challenges.


Functional Tasks

Drive a world-class global capability in decision support and industrial data science, this will include:

  • Enhance current Machine Learning and Cognitive Computing capabilities
  • Formalize a distinct Hatch point of view for our decision support services.
  • Build and develop the skills of our existing team.
  • Create a common architecture for development.
  • Build a virtual team with others involved in this field in Hatch (including Hatch citizen data scientists).
  • Coach and Mentor the data science team to further develop data analytics capabilities.
  • Own the tools, methodologies and frameworks required to deliver data analytics solutions.  
  • Work with the Digital Leadership team to refine and implement the go to market plan for data analytics.
  • Work closely with all Digital Sector leaders (Mining, Infrastructure and Energy) to develop a value proposition, message and market positioning to expand into those sectors.
  • Work with other business units’ leadership and its clients to identify and develop opportunities.
  • Report regularly and proactively to the Data Analytics Sponsor and Digital Management on opportunities and projects to support hiring and investment plans as required.
  • Develop new business channels.
  • Serve as active Digital Thought Leader in the field of data analytics.
  • Serve as Project Manager and Sponsor for data analytics projects.

  • Manage relationship with key partners.
  • Remain abreast of the industry, competitors and technology trends with a view to ensuring that the firm's services best align to market needs.

Key Performance Deliverables

In light of the identified responsibilities, the following are specific deliverables that the position is designed to achieve:

  • Specific measures of performance will be discussed with and agreed upon with the successful candidate and will revolve around building of a global capability and business development.  More specifically it will include:
  • Targets related to data analytics work pipeline development, order intake, backlog development, profitability of the overall practice and generation of opportunities for other parts of Digital and Hatch organization through cross-selling.
  • Targets related to team footprint and capability.


Preferred Experience & Education

The following indicates specific industry, academic and functional experience/qualifications that are important to the successful achievement of the identified responsibilities and performance deliverables.

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in data analytics in relevant sectors (mining, oil and gas, infrastructure or utilities) coupled with implementation of digital technology solutions.
  • Very strong technical orientation to industrial data analytics.
  • Expert in the development of value proposition and business cases, vision and realization roadmap strategy.
  • Excellent facilitation skills to bring alignment (break silos) between different parts of the client’s organizations.
  • Proven experience in successfully applying digital technologies / solutions to a very traditional working environment.
