The Lead, Transit Operations Maintenance and Storage Facilities provides technical leadership and expert guidance in the planning, design, delivery, commissioning, and operation of rail maintenance depots, storage yards, and associated systems. The role ensures that facilities are safe, efficient, maintainable, compliant with applicable standards, and aligned with operational requirements throughout the asset lifecycle.
The Lead acts as a technical authority supporting engineering teams, project managers, operators, maintainers, and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Expertise & Advisory
- Provide expert advice on the conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design of train maintenance and storage facilities, including depots, yards, workshops, and inspection facilities.
- Define and validate functional requirements for maintenance, stabling, cleaning, inspection, and repair activities.
- Review and approve technical documents, drawings, calculations, and specifications related to facilities and equipment.
- Advise on best practices, lessons learned, and industry benchmarks for rail maintenance infrastructure.
Facility & Systems Scope
- Maintenance buildings (heavy and light maintenance, inspection halls, shops).
- Storage and stabling yards.
- Track layouts, switches, and special trackwork within depots.
- Power supply systems (traction power interfaces, shore supply, third rail/OHL zones).
- Mechanical and electrical systems (cranes, hoists, jacks, turntables, wheel lathes).
- Utilities and services (compressed air, water, drainage, fire protection, ventilation).
- Cleaning, washing, and servicing systems.
- Environmental control, sustainability, and energy-efficient solutions.
Operations & Maintainability
- Ensure facilities support efficient train movements, safe working practices, and maintainability.
- Coordinate facility design with rolling stock characteristics and maintenance concepts.
- Support development of maintenance strategies, workflows, and capacity planning.
- Evaluate operational readiness and contribute to commissioning and handover activities.
Safety, Compliance & Risk
- Ensure compliance with relevant railway standards, codes, regulations, and safety requirements.
- Participate in safety reviews, hazard identification, and risk assessments.
- Support environmental, health, and safety (EHS) compliance.
- Identify technical risks and propose mitigation measures.
Project & Stakeholder Support
- Support project teams during procurement, contractor evaluations, and technical bid assessments.
- Interface with civil, systems, rolling stock, and operations teams to ensure integrated solutions.
- Provide technical input during claims, change management, and issue resolution.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to knowledge transfer.
Education & Experience
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architecture or related discipline (Industrial Architecture).
Experience
- Typically, 10+ years of experience in rail or transit systems.
- Demonstrated expertise in train maintenance and storage facility design and operation.
- Experience with new build and/or brownfield depot projects.
- Familiarity with lifecycle asset management principles.
- Experience with a range of project delivery models: Alliance, Public-Private Partnership (PPP), Design Build (DB), Design-Bid-Build, Design for Manufacturing (DfM), Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA).
- Commissioning and operational readiness experience.
- Sustainability, automation, or digital maintenance facility initiatives.
Technical Skills & Knowledge
- Rail maintenance practices for rolling stock (metro, LRT, commuter, or heavy rail).
- Depot and yard layout optimization.
- Maintenance equipment selection and integration.
- Interface management between facilities, rolling stock, and systems.
- Applicable standards (e.g., local railway authority standards, EN, AREMA, NFPA, FRA, IEEE, APTA, where applicable).
- Strong understanding of constructability, maintainability, and operability.

- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.

Working Conditions
- Office‑based with periodic site visits to maintenance and storage facilities.
- Possible travel to project sites or operational depots.
- May be required to support activities during commissioning or operational phases.
- May be required to travel to manufacturing facilities.
- International travel may be required.
Compensation: $180,000 - $260,000

Your individual compensation within this range will depend on factors such as skills, experience, qualifications and location.
