Utility Distribution Planning Engineer

Are you ready for your next challenge?  Hatch continues to expand its Smart Grid team advising utilities on the impacts of grid modernization, digital utility solutions, electrification, advanced grid operations, microgrids, and distribution system design. 

Aging infrastructure, grid modernization, DER integration, and growing electric demand due to electrification are all increasing the need to upgrade, expand, better utilize, and modernize the heart of the electric grid: the distribution network.

Hatch is looking for Distribution Planning Engineers to provide experienced technical contributions to applicable distribution system designs, models, expansions, and integrations of intelligent, remote, and automated devices. Projects will be primarily for utility clients across the US and Canada requires support from planning engineers with a utility level understanding of distribution challenges and the ability to determine technical solutions.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Smart Grid, this position can be linked to any of the following Hatch offices: Brooklyn, Philadelphia (Ambler), Pittsburgh, Seattle, Tampa, Boston, or Houston in the US; Montreal, Mississauga, Niagara Falls, Winnipeg, Calgary, or Vancouver within Canada.  Certain other Hatch office locations may be considered.

Project Delivery Responsibilities may include: 

  • Contributing and/or leading distribution planning related projects
  • Solve challenging problems pertaining to distribution design plans, specification definition, power quality, protection & controls, system modeling, and/or project/program implementations
  • Managing project resources, who may be a combination of colleagues from across Hatch’s various teams and subcontractors as applicable
  • As project manager, and with the support of other technical leads as applicable, be accountable for project deliverables, while also ensuring quality, budget, timeliness, and alignment with client expectations
  • Work alongside and support delivery of projects within the Smart Grid team and/or other Hatch teams including Power System Studies, Substation & Transmission, Urban Solutions, Renewable Energy, Transit, and/or Ports/Terminals teams
  • Coordinate with utilities and other stakeholders to collect information and contribute to technical communications
  • Provide ongoing technical mentoring to the growing team of junior, intermediate, and senior technologists, engineers, and designers focused on distribution and distribution substation designs including electrical, related civil, and applicable protection and control systems

 

 

Business Development Responsibilities may include: 

  • Identifying and supporting the pursuit of client opportunities requiring Distribution Planning services across the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean
  • Lead or participate in Bid / No Bid discussions for potential opportunities
  • Lead or support the creation of proposal documents, including scope, schedule, and level of effort estimates
  • Work with the marketing team to establish / update marketing & client facing materials, as applicable
  • Senior and Intermediate resources will be expected to contribute to marketing campaigns, attend and speak at industry conferences, and present to clients to advance leads and secure opportunities
  • All team members are expected to develop thought leadership materials for publication in industry publications, at conferences, or on applicable social media platforms

 

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Planning Engineer should have an undergraduate degree in engineering, preferably electrical; or significant equivalent industry experience in distribution planning with an advanced technologist degree and previous experience in related design at a utility or engineering consulting firm
  • Minimum of 10-12 years of related professional experience for senior roles, and 4 years of professional experience for more junior-intermediate roles.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience leading distribution utility planning projects making final recommendations to engineering / design teams
  • Proficient experience with CYME 
  • Proficient with MicroStation, Autocad, or similar software
  • Proficient with project management and document control software such as ProjectWise and SharePoint
  • Exceptional understanding of electrical design and protection & Control standards, ideally across multiple jurisdictions within Canada and the US
  • Previous experience successfully managing project teams on utility design assignments
  • Technically fluent in English to a high report writing standard

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineering licence
  • Advanced degree in related field such as Electrical or Power Systems Engineering
  • IEEE Member
  • Familiar with additional system modeling tools such as DigSilent PowerFactor, PSCAD, Synergi, or PSSE
  • Significant related work experience working at distribution utilities
  • Bilingual with French, Spanish, or Portuguese

 

Occasional domestic and international travel throughout North America for client, conference, and site visits is required. Candidate must be available and able to travel to such events.
