Summary
At Hatch, the Senior Structural Designer is part of an engineering team providing engineering services to large and small projects. The role is responsible for the production of structural 3D models and 2D drawings in accordance with project requirements under the supervision of the Lead Structural Designer. The successful candidate will participate in a wide range of projects covering structures such as building foundations, equipment foundations, building steel framing, and designs of various other structures for mining and industrial plants. Activities include structural steel and concrete modeling and drafting for both front end planning and the detailed engineering phase for multi-discipline projects.
As the successful candidate, you will:
- Assist the Lead Structural Designer with the delivery of project requirements as they relate to scope, quantities, cost and schedule.
- Carry out the preparation of contract drawings, record keeping and other statistical work.
- Produce and maintain technical and engineering drawings using 2D and 3D CAD software as required.
- Perform conceptual layout work.
- Develop design details.
- Check drawings prior to release in order to ensure scope objectives and quality requirements are achieved.
- Ensure coordination with designers and engineers within the discipline and with other disciplines.
- Supervise and delegate duties to junior and intermediate designer/drafters as needed and follow-up to ensure completion of activities.
- Perform clash detection of models with other discipline models.
- Participation in formal engineering review processes.
- Verify onsite condition and dimensions relating to existing facilities.
- Incorporate safety in design.
Qualifications and Experience
- Advanced College diploma specializing in civil/structural design.
- Minimum of 12 years of structural design experience.
- Proficient in the use of 2D and 3D structural design/drawing software packages, including at least 2 years working experience with Bentley MicroStation software or Smartplant 3D software.
- Capable of estimating and scope development for projects.
- Demonstrated ability to complete jobs through all phases, from conception through close-out.
- Assist department supervisor and engineers with various department planning tasks as required.
- Knowledge of industry or regulatory standards, regulations and codes pertinent to structural design in Ontario.
- Experience with both small, focused scope projects as well as large, multi-disciplinary engineering project environments.
- Strong communication skills and an ability to develop personal networks.
- Strong planning and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize work tasks.
