Position Summary

 

The Tunnelling and Trenchless Delivery Lead will provide technical leadership and project delivery support for major underground infrastructure projects involving conventional tunnelling, microtunnelling, pipe jacking, horizontal directional drilling (HDD), shaft construction, and other trenchless technologies. The role will support the planning, design, and construction of municipal water and wastewater conveyance infrastructure.

 

The successful candidate will lead design activities, oversee project execution, mentor junior engineers, support business development initiatives, and contribute to the continued growth of the tunnelling and trenchless practice.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Project Delivery

  • Lead planning, design, and construction support services for tunnelling and trenchless infrastructure projects.
  • Oversee preparation of technical specifications, design drawings, and contract documents.
  • Coordinate with municipalities, regulators, utility owners, and other project stakeholders.
  • Lead the technical delivery of tunnelling and trenchless infrastructure projects.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams throughout project execution.
  • Manage scope, schedule, budget, quality, and risk associated with assigned projects.
  • Support project managers in planning and delivering engineering services.
  • Review engineering deliverables and ensure compliance with applicable standards and client requirements.
  • Provide construction-phase engineering support, including contractor inquiries, site reviews, field inspections, and issue resolution.
  • Participate in project reviews, design workshops, and risk assessments.

 

Technical Leadership

  • Provide technical leadership for tunnelling, trenchless, and municipal water and wastewater conveyance infrastructure projects.
  • Provide expertise in:
    • Conventional tunnelling
    • TBM tunnelling
    • Sequential Excavation Method (SEM/NATM)
    • Microtunnelling
    • Pipe jacking
    • Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)
    • Shaft and portal design
    • Ground support systems
    • Excavation support and temporary works
  • Support geotechnical interpretation and constructability evaluations.
  • Develop technical reports, design criteria, specifications, calculations, and engineering studies.
  • Lead alignment development, constructability reviews, risk assessments, and value engineering exercises for tunnels, shafts, and associated conveyance infrastructure.
  • Ensure designs consider safety, operability, maintainability, and construction feasibility.

 

Client and Business Development

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors, and industry stakeholders.
  • Support proposal preparation, technical approaches, work plans, and fee estimates.
  • Participate in business development activities and project pursuits.
  • Represent the organization at industry conferences, technical forums, and client meetings.
  • Identify opportunities for repeat and new business.
  • Support business development initiatives and provide strategic advice to clients on tunnelling, trenchless, and municipal conveyance infrastructure solutions.

 

Leadership and Mentoring

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers.
  • Support recruitment, development, and retention of team members.
  • Foster a collaborative, safety-focused, and high-performance culture.
  • Promote knowledge sharing and continuous improvement across project teams.

 

Qualifications

 

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or related field.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration.
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in tunnelling, trenchless, underground infrastructure, municipal water, wastewater, or linear conveyance project delivery.
  • Experience delivering municipal water and wastewater conveyance, tunnelling, or trenchless infrastructure projects.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Underground construction methods
    • Ground behaviour and geotechnical principles
    • Risk management and constructability
    • Contract delivery models
    • Design standards and industry best practices
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and project coordination skills.

 

Preferred

  • Experience working within an EPCM consulting environment.
  • Experience on major transportation, transit, water, wastewater, mining, or utility infrastructure projects.
  • Design-build, progressive design-build, alliance, or alternative delivery experience.
  • Experience serving as Task Lead, Design Manager, Technical Lead, or Delivery Lead.
  • Strong client-facing and business development experience.
  • Construction support and field experience on active tunnelling projects.
  • Master's degree in geotechnical, civil, or tunnelling engineering.
  • Demonstrated understanding of municipal water and wastewater conveyance systems, including watermains, trunk sewers, conveyance tunnels, intakes, and outfalls.
  • Experience delivering major water and wastewater tunnelling or trenchless infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with municipal standards, permitting, and approval processes.

  • Construction planning, staging, constructability review, and engineering support during construction.
  • Familiarity with BIM, AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, GIS platforms, and project scheduling tools.

 

Base salary range: $115,000 - $165,000
