Hatch acts as the owner’s engineer for the CDPQ Infrastructures on the major automated light rail transit system (LRT) project, the REM.  This project is a 67 km long corridor with 25 stations involving 2 tunnels.   Involved right from the beginning of the project, Hatch’s role, is to continue to accompany the client until project delivery and start-up, has been confirmed.

As part of a multi-disciplinary team involved in this automated LRT project, the Railway Engineering Technical Lead will lead the team of railway infrastructure experts in civil engineering –rail (right-of-way, structures, embankment and drainage), railway tracks, switches and crossings, catenary structures, railway fastening systems and their interfaces with other areas of expertise involved, including systems and rolling stock.


  • Manage the design verification and validation team during every design phase (30%, 70% and 100%) and quality audits with suppliers for elements under the Lead’s jurisdiction;
  • Plan and organize the work of the teams under the Lead, including managing outside experts at the project head office and subcontractors, when needed;
  • Attend meetings and participate in interdisciplinary coordination reviews and the coordination of system - interfaces between the railway infrastructure suppliers and the systems and rolling stock suppliers;
  • Interact with the client and the other suppliers, including builders;
  • Have a comprehensive view and ensure team leadership to facilitate project advancement in design-construction mode, which means starting the work before completion of the project design;
  • Ensure the leadership, creativity and effectiveness of the team of experts during the work execution phase for all railway engineering support services;
  • Organize the review and follow-up of design changes during construction work;
  • Plan and organize the production of certain standard railway engineering elements under minimum supervision of the various components and interaction with other disciplines;
  • Carry out the internal audit and review of railway engineering deliverables to ensure technical compliance;
  • Estimate the costs and prepare and follow the schedules and budgets of specific mandates requested by the client;
  • Act as mentor to junior staff;
  • Ensure that technical quality standards for railway engineering infrastructure are constantly maintained, by ensuring that the demands of the client, of the Hatch quality system (IMS) and the industry’s best practices are met;
  • Support Hatch business initiatives and projects, as needed.


  • Fluently Bilingual in French and in English
  • University degree or recognized certification in civil engineering, specialized in railway engineering;
  • A minimum of ten (10) years’ professional experience in design and management of LRT-type railway engineering projects;
  • Current member of the Quebec Engineering Board (OIQ) or eligible to become one;
  • Excellent technical and communication skills (French and English written and spoken);
  • Good knowledge of American and European standards for fabrication and construction of automated LRT-type railway infrastructure;
  • Knowledge acquired on interfaces between railway systems and infrastructure;
  • Experience with PPP type projects or other alternative method of delivery;
  • Experience working on major projects valued at more than 1 billion dollars;
  • Experience supervising rail projects, electrified, and automated projects;
  • Good knowledge of rail industry rules and standards;
  • Good knowledge of rules for executing work near live electrified railway lines;
  • Ability to move from one site to another as needed.
