Hatch is currently seeking a highly motivated Director - Tunnels  to lead our US business.   As the successful candidate, you have extensive experience in tunnel design, construction and project management to join our dynamic team.  You will represent Hatch with major clients as well as business development opportunities.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Lead technical delivery of tunnel consultancy services;
  • Lead business development and strategic initiatives;
  • Project Director and team leadership across engineering disciplines;
  • Project management, client engagement and technical leadership of various tunnel projects;
  • Plan, organize, and lead project teams in the delivery, design, and documentation of project requirements for large transit, highways, water and wastewater tunnels;
  • Oversee detailed design calculations and drawings for tunnels, shafts and stations;
  • Assist in the development and presentation of bid proposals to pursue contracts for underground projects including large diameter tunnels, micro-tunnels, and trenchless applications, as tunnel structural rehabilitation projects;
  • Lead project teams in the development of geo-investigations, evaluation of geotechnical data, geo-structural analysis, design, evaluation and preparation of calculations and drawings and construction bid documents, preparation of feasibility studies for tunneling related projects including cost and schedule estimates;
  • Prepare standard documents, such as technical specifications, in accordance with applicable design codes;
  • Assist in the mentoring and management of senior, intermediate and junior engineers;
  • Supervise, coordinate and review the work of other tunnel engineers;
  • Liaison with other disciplines, professionals, clients and third parties as needed;
  • Contribute to the successful completion of projects in area of responsibility;
  • Contribute to the Technical Governance initiative;

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil/ Structural Engineering or Geological Engineering from an accredited university;
  • Professional engineering designation is required; PMP is an asset;
  • Extensive experience of the management of major metro, railway or road tunnel projects from feasibility and design through to construction and close-out;
  • 15+ years’ experience in the design, construction and project management of underground and tunnel lining structures;
  • Experience of working within a design practice or consultancy on multiple concurrent commissions, and representing the company to clients;
  • Experience in the design of tunnel excavation and support systems for transportation and water & wastewater projects;
  • Broad understanding of trenchless technologies and tunnelling methods;
  • Experience with design of shaft support techniques in both soil and rock environments;
  • Experience using computer analysis programs;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as required for business development;
  • Proven leadership and team management skills;
  • Advanced knowledge in soil and rock mechanics, and ground/structural numerical methods and their application in ground or tunnel;
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills;
  • Active member of the tunnel design and construction professional community with experience managing complex underground projects for water, wastewater, transportation and other types of projects.
