We are seeking a talented Electrical Engineering Discipline Lead to become part of our Hydropower and Dams team in our Niagara Falls office.  This is a position for which your focus will be to support and execute hydro and dam related projects and ensure technical excellence within the existing team.  You will be part of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team providing engineering services to large and small hydropower and dams owners in Ontario, across Canada, and globally.

As the successful candidate, you will:

  • Provide leadership and mentoring/coaching to the electrical team
  • Proactively manage resource forecasts and work assignments for the team
  • Ensure quality control on inter and intra-discipline deliverables
  • Work closely with other discipline leads and leadership team
  • Contribute to long-term vision for the growth and succession planning for the Niagara Falls office
  • Inspire the next generation of young engineers
  • Support or lead client engagement activities, and proposal preparation
  • On projects, serve as Lead Electrical Engineer, or support the Engineering Manager/Lead Electrical Engineer with the delivery of project requirements as they relate to scope, cost and schedule
  • Work to ensure the implementation of safety and integrity principles in electrical documentation
  • Maintain electrical engineering work procedures, specifications, and computer aided design programs
  • Perform electrical engineering system design, studies, investigations and analysis, technical evaluations, cost estimates, and options analysis for new equipment or modifications to existing equipment and systems
  • Perform design calculations and documenting findings and recommendations in a report
  • Prepare technical specifications for a variety of electrical equipment involving construction and/or rehabilitation of electrical systems
  • Prepare single line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, and equipment layouts
  • Prepare equipment operating manuals, test procedures, and training material
  • Define the system requirements to achieve the project results and monitor effectiveness
  • Review and execute the electrical and layout design criteria documents
  • Review electrical technical deliverables (specifications, datasheets, drawings, etc.)
  • Assist in the preparation and development of project specific procedures
  • Prepare and contribute to technical memos and reports, within areas of expertise
  • Provide input to engineering, operating and capital cost estimates on projects
  • Participate in project design reviews
  • Ensure coordination, between the electrical team and other disciplines, of all activities being performed as the design evolves
  • Ensure that quality audits of engineering work are carried out in accordance with project procedures and the quality assurance plan
  • Promote and maintain the application of ethical and professional practices in the execution of engineering work
  • Ensure that all work designed, manufactured and supplied in the electrical engineering discipline complies with the relevant sections of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
  • Participation in the compilation of the client Project Safety Management Plan with specific reference to switching, isolation and lockout procedures.
  • Stamp documents and drawings as required and if appropriately registered
  • Manage small capital and maintenance design projects
  • Perform site visits to various client sites for inspection and assessment of existing electrical systems and client meetings
  • Lead and support development standard design tools and specifications as well as other department initiatives

 

You bring to the role:

  • A recognized degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university
  • A Master’s degree in electrical engineering will be considered an asset
  • Registered (or eligible to do so) as a Professional Engineer, in Ontario or elsewhere in Canada
  • At least 10+ years project engineering experience
  • At least, 8-10 years’ of relevant experience in design of electrical systems within hydropower, mining, steel, municipality, utility, or transportation projects. Experience working overall ideally within an EPCM, in heavy industry environment, is preferred
  • Experience with design of electrical equipment including low/medium/high voltage switchgear, transformers, motors and motor control centers, diesel generators, lighting, cables and cable raceway systems, and grounding
  • Knowledge on specification of large motor/generator sets and associated equipment, including high-voltage switchgear, transformers, starters and related protection systems
  • Experience with building electrical systems, such as fire alarms, security, lighting, & communications, fibre network, and data network will be an asset
  • Working knowledge of generators, exciters, governors, PLC, process controls and instrumentation will be considered an asset
  • Experienced on electrical calculations (short circuit, load flow, arc flash and harmonics)
  • Strong deliverable focus and ability to plan the work
  • A high degree of understanding of interdisciplinary dependencies related to the discipline
  • Strong understanding of procurement, contracting and commissioning methodologies
  • Excellent understanding of industry/regulatory codes and standards (CSA, NEC, NFPA and IEEE standards). Familiarity with international standards will be a plus
  • Proficiency with other Computer Design Tools (Mathcad, AutoCAD, MicroStation) will be considered an asset
  • Experience on electrical design tools / power system study software such as SPEL ETAP, SKM, and Easy Power are a plus
  • Sound knowledge of 3D data-centric design systems
  • Site construction and commissioning experience and working direct with the client will be considered an asset
  • Strong client focus and a desire to achieve results including the ability to manage multiple priorities and time lines
  • Experienced and proficient in the preparation of reports and specifications
  • Experience in the use of procedures and workflows in the execution of projects
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to convey project technical information to project managers, clients and peers
  • Organizational skills, and the ability to multi-task, prioritize, take direction, and provide direction to others ensuring the quality of deliverables
