We are seeking an Environmental Scientist to join our team of talented environmental professionals in our Niagara Falls office.  Hatch’s Environmental Services Group focuses on providing our clients to solutions to their environmental and social challenges. The group works directly with clients or in collaboration with other service areas within Hatch, in developing new business opportunities.

 

Joining as part of Hatch’s Environmental Services Group, the successful applicant will support the team in a diverse range of environmental and social management matters including support to lenders, due diligence studies, environmental and social impact assessment, applications, undertaking of audits and development of environmental management systems, predominantly within the natural resources, mining, power and energy sectors.

  • A strong track record of project delivery including high quality reporting, budget control and timely delivery of reports; and
  • The post will require a good understanding of client and business needs and will require the candidate to demonstrate an active interest in the business development process.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Environmental Planning, Geography, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, or equivalent in related discipline;
  • 4 – 5 years of related experience in managing and coordinating environmental assessments and securing permits/approvals;
  • Technical skills in environmental impact assessment or environmental and social due diligence;
  • Knowledge of provincial and federal environmental and social standards;
  • Flexibility to travel periodically; and
  • Knowledge of French would be an advantage.

 

 The Role

  • Contribute to environmental assessments, environmental management strategies, and plans including research, report writing, field work, and stakeholder and regulatory consultation;
  • Maintain an up to date knowledge of existing and emerging regulatory requirements, wildlife and vegetation assessment methodologies, and best practices;
  • To deliver high-quality environmental and sustainability services to agreed budgets and deadlines;
  • Support permitting, and approvals related to the natural environment (e.g., Environmental Protection Act, Fisheries Act, Canadian Environmental Assessment Act);
  • Develop, prepare and maintain project/task schedules and budgets for the environmental component of the project. Monitor projects progress, work hours, budgets and expenditures, using project scheduling and cost control tools;
  • Coordinate work with other environmental specialists (i.e., noise, air, archaeology, built heritage, fisheries, terrestrial ecologists, etc.), including management of subcontractors;
  • Identify business development opportunities;
  • Mentor junior staff and encourage their personal development goals; and
  • Take a support or lead role (as appropriate) in the preparation of proposals.
