Hatch’s Urban Solutions group is looking for an adaptable, self-motivated planning graduate student to be an intern for the fall of 2019, with potential to extend into spring 2020.
Our Oakland Urban Solutions team has focused primarily on economics, planning, and environment. Our goals include the promotion of socioeconomic and environmental sustainability in infrastructure, city planning and policy projects. We do this through rigorous economic planning techniques and developing innovative analytical approaches to varied domestic and international contexts. We also work closely with other Hatch offices around the globe on planning and economic issues.

Successful candidates will have an interest in the economics and policies of sustainability, environmental regulations and their applications, infrastructure, real estate, and quantitative analytical approaches to complex urban challenges.

The role is primarily a support role for project managers in the group working on project and research tasks. Most of the work tends to be project-focused for both private- and public-sector clients.

Sample projects include:

  • Pro forma and feasibility analyses and market studies for urban development.
  • Statistical and case-study research on trends in urbanization and development.
  • Socioeconomic analyses for environmental impact reports.
  • Focused research to support projects.
  • Fiscal impact analyses for transit-oriented developments.
  • Financing strategies for real estate projects, infrastructure, or environmental improvements.
  • Infrastructure triple bottom line analyses.

Education and Skill Requirements:

  • Ideally, candidates will be earning a master’s degree in urban planning, sustainable design, environmental economics and management, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of the principles and practices of sustainability planning with an emphasis on economic development, green development economics, real estate, and land-use/environmental policy design.
  • Strong communication and writing skills are critical.
  • Detail-oriented, willing to continuously learn and a desire to work in a dynamic, deadline driven team environment.
  • Quantitative skills; experience with financial and economic analysis and modeling a plus.
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office Suite imperative.
  • Experience with quantitative/statistical programs such as Python or R, graphic suites such as Adobe Creative Cloud, and GIS desirable.
