Looking to take the next step in your career? Hatch is currently seeking a highly motivated Iron and Steel Specialist to join the Metals team in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Hatch has been serving the world’s mining, metals, and industrial sectors with studies, design, engineering, technology development, project and construction management, commissioning, and operations support for both greenfield and brownfield facilities.

As the iron and steel industry accelerates its transition toward lower-carbon production, increased efficiency, and resilient operations, our focus is on practical innovation. The Metals team in Pittsburgh supports local, regional, and global clients across the full iron and steel value chain, from concept development and feasibility studies through detailed engineering, commissioning, and operational improvement.

 
As the successful candidate, you will:

•    Lead and support iron and steelmaking projects from concept and feasibility studies through basic and detailed engineering
•    Provide process and technology expertise across ironmaking, steelmaking, and related plant systems, including blast furnaces, direct reduction, electric arc furnaces, basic oxygen furnaces, secondary metallurgy, casting, and material handling where applicable
•    Supervise the development and review of process design criteria, mass and energy balances, flowsheets, equipment specifications, operating philosophies, and technical deliverables
•    Support decarbonization, energy efficiency, and modernization studies, including hydrogen-based ironmaking, DRI, EAF integration, alternative fuels, off-gas systems, and waste heat recovery opportunities
•    Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to integrate process requirements into safe, operable, and cost-effective plant designs
•    Participate in client engagement, technical workshops, site assessments, value improvement reviews, and proposal development
•    Contribute to commissioning, ramp-up, troubleshooting, and operational improvement assignments for iron and steel facilities
•    Mentor and support the professional development of young engineers 

 
You bring to the role:

•    Bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline; Masters degree or PhD considered an asset
•    10+ years of relevant experience in ironmaking, steelmaking, process engineering, plant operations, technology development, or engineering consulting
•    Strong technical knowledge of integrated steel production routes, including key process equipment, operating constraints, product quality drivers, and industry challenges
•    Experience with process modeling, mass and energy balances, technology evaluation, capital project development, or operational troubleshooting
•    Ability to interface confidently with clients, vendors, operators, and multidisciplinary engineering teams
•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical topics into clear recommendations
•    Willingness to travel to client sites and project locations as required
