The Mechanical & Piping Group is a Hatch global practice providing Mechanical design expertise to a wide variety of Hatch's commodity-based business practices. Our capability spans through the entire project lifecycle comprising; scoping, conceptual design, pre-feasibility, feasibility studies, detailed engineering, construction support and project management. The group supports all of Hatch’s sectors including; energy, mining & mineral processing and infrastructure.

 

Our Saskatoon team is currently seeking a dedicated Senior Mechanical/Piping Engineer to assist project work both in the office, and in the field.  The Mechanical/Piping Engineer is broadly responsible for establishing system requirements, performing functional analyses, defining design criteria, preparing engineering calculations, technical specifications, data sheets and reports.  In addition, the Mechanical/Piping Engineer is required to develop, or provide input into 3D models and 2D drawings.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in defining project scope
  • Leading mechanical and piping teams on projects and ensure delivery of project requirements as they relate to scope, cost and schedule
  • Engaging with clients in relation to project work
  • Performing system analyses, establishing user requirements, analyzing system functional and performance requirements, defining design criteria, and establishing system layouts and designs
  • Providing leadership and guidance to junior members of the mechanical and piping team
  • Reviewing the work of junior members of the mechanical and piping team 
  • Preparing engineering calculations such as hydraulic modelling, conveyor design, equipment sizing and tank, pressure vessel and bin design and ensuring that all analyses satisfy user and system requirements
  • Preparing technical specifications based on input received from other disciplines
  • Conducting interface management between related systems
  • Preparing data sheets based on input received from other disciplines
  • Preparing and contributing to technical memos and reports, within areas of expertise
  • Providing input to engineering, operating and capital cost estimates
  • Preparing or providing input to 3D models and 2D mechanical drawings
  • Participating in and contributing to design reviews
  • Reviewing vendor documents and shop drawings
  • Preparing project proposals
  • Business Development with current and prospective clients
  • Undertaking engineering manager or project engineering roles on small to medium size projects

 
Qualifications and Experience:

  • BSc/BEng in Mechanical Engineering 
  • Professional Engineering Certification in Saskatchewan and/or other provinces of Canada
  • Established project engineering experience
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to complete tasks independently and supervise junior team members as required
  • Working knowledge of industry standards, regulations and codes pertinent to the mechanical engineering discipline
  • Ability to function as a member of a multidisciplinary team and coordinate mechanical activities between disciplines
  • 10+ years of experience working as a mechanical engineer in heavy industry
  • Experience in mining and minerals processing and the typical equipment used
  • Familiarity with typical potash mining and milling
  • Experience preparing project proposals, project change notices, and estimation of engineering hours
  • Sound knowledge of engineering management systems
  • Ability to delegate tasks and effectively supervise others
  • Experienced in the use of procedures and workflows in the execution of projects
  • Sound knowledge of 3D data centric design systems is considered an asset
