SEM-Hatch is a joint venture between Hatch Ltd. and Sikumiut Environmental Management Ltd. providing engineering, construction and project management services in the province of Newfoundland & Labrador. SEM-Hatch is performing Engineering and Project Management Services for the Voisey’s Bay Mine Expansion project. Our client is now ready to initiate the construction phase of an underground mine. This mine expansion project is expected to produce about 40,000 tonnes of nickel per year and extend the life of the Voisey’s Bay operation until at least 2032. We are interested in receiving resumes for Mine Technician(site position).


The successful candidate will be a member of the Mines Engineering team. The Mine Technician provides services within the mine to ensure compliance with legislative and Vale regulations regarding ventilation, surveying, mine planning and ground control. The position requires the ability to build and maintain relationships and interacting with other technical staff, supervision, and employees.


Key Responsibilities:

Duties of the job will include but are not limited to:

  • Analyze air flows and gas levels to ensure regulatory compliance;
  • Issue weekly ventilation report;
  • Communicate ventilation deficiencies to the appropriate mine personnel;
  • Assist with ventilation planning and design for underground excavations; 
  • Care and control of ventilation instruments;
  • Order ventilation fans and equipment;
  • Maintain fire and escape route plans;
  • Maintain survey equipment, survey software and source surveying supplies;
  • Upload survey information and update drawings following standards including sections;
  • Provide short to long range planning support to the operations;
  • Create final layouts for development, raises and miscellaneous holes;
  • Provide input to the scheduling process;
  • Audit installed ground support;
  • Check and interpret daily ground support instrumentation readings;
  • Monitor field ground support testing.


Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A diploma in Mining Technology, or a combination of high school diploma with strong skills in math and computers and  8-10 years of experience in an underground environment;
  • General knowledge of surveying principles and applications;
  • Knowledge of underground mine ventilation systems;
  • Experience using ventilation instruments in an underground environment;
  • Knowledge of various mining methods;
  • Knowledge of ground support systems and hardware;
  • Experience with mine planning (Deswik) and CAD software;
  • Experience with Oracle or SAP would be an asset;
  • Strong computer skills including knowledge and experience with MS Office;
  • Demonstrates safe behavior.
  • Knowledge of Newfoundland and Labrador Regulation 5/12.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills.
