Summary

 

We are currently seeking a talented Intermediate Structural Engineer to become part of our expanding Hydropower and Dams Team in our Winnipeg Office.

The Structural Engineer will participate in a wide range of projects covering preliminary design, detailed design, tendering and construction support.  Activities will include design of safety, debris and/or ice booms for installation at dams/spillways and hydropower facilities, dam safety inspections and reviews, public safety assessments, and concrete dam rehabilitation designs.

 

The Structural Engineer will be responsible for preparing engineering calculations, technical specifications, design reports and providing engineering input into drawing production.  Part of the role will also include assisting with proposal writing and business development.

Having a strong technical background in Structural Engineering for dams, spillways, and hydropower structures is an asset.  Effective writing and interpersonal skills are essential.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead public safety/debris/ice boom projects from concept to construction.  Projects will generally be concentrated within the water resources, flood control and hydropower sectors.
  • Oversee structural engineering analyses and designs in collaboration with water resources and geotechnical engineers.
  • Preparing detailed technical reports, engineering calculations, technical specifications, correspondence, and oversee preparation of drawings.
  • Promote compliance with all relevant engineering standards and internal procedures for design activities.
  • Review and evaluate technical work prepared by junior engineers, intermediate engineers, designers, technicians and technologists.
  • Undertake field visits to various client sites for review, inspection and assessment of existing structures.
  • Provide input to engineering, operating and capital cost estimates.
  • Stamp documents and drawings as required, if appropriately registered.
  • Maintain and develop client relationships.
  • Assist in defining project scope and preparing proposals.

 

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • A recognized degree in civil/structural engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Registered, or eligible to be registered, and licensed to practice as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Manitoba.
  • Minimum 6 years engineering experience, post-graduation.
  • Ability to function with minimal supervision and balance the demands of multiple projects.
  • Sound understanding of engineering design codes and technical standards.
  • Experience with Staad Pro or similar structural analysis software.
  • Valid Class 5 drivers license.
  • Ability to travel within Canada on short term assignments as required.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good planning and organizational skills.
  • Awareness of Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) policy and standards.

Preferred

  • Demonstrated expertise in the water resources, flood control, flood protection and/or hydropower sectors.
  • Experience in the use of procedures and workflows in the execution of projects.
  • Previous consulting engineering experience.
  • Experience with Mathcad.
