Senior/Supervisory Dam Engineer (Geotechnical) for Winnipeg Office

We are currently seeking a talented Senior/Supervisory Dam Engineer (Geotechnical) to become part of our expanding Water Power Business Unit in our Winnipeg Office.  This is a leadership position for which your focus will be both outward facing, concentrating on maintaining and growing our client base by executing challenging projects and enhancing brand recognition, and inward facing, ensuring technical excellence within the existing team.  You will require a strong technical background in Geotechnical Engineering for dams, spillways, and hydropower structures, with a focus on soft soil engineering on the Canadian prairies.  Exceptional writing and interpersonal skills are essential.  Diverse experience will also be considered an asset. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing geotechnical projects from concept to construction.  Projects will generally be concentrated within the water resources, flood control and hydropower sectors with opportunities to participate in the infrastructure and mining/industrial sectors.
  • Overseeing geotechnical engineering analyses and designs in collaboration with Civil and Water Resources Engineers, including: embankment dam designs; foundation designs, channel designs; slope stability assessments; seepage assessments; and soil improvement designs.
  • Preparing detailed technical reports, drawings, specifications and correspondence.
  • Maintaining and developing client relationships.
  • Identifying key opportunities in the geotechnical field with a focus on the Canadian prairie region.
  • Developing business, writing proposals and presenting to clients.
  • Mentorship and development of junior engineers, designers and technicians.
  • Undertaking technical reviews of documents and technical drawings prepared by the team.

Qualifications and Experience


  • Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Geotechnical Engineering.
  • 15+ years post-graduation Geotechnical engineering experience.
  • Registered, or eligible to be registered, and licensed to practice as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Manitoba
  • Demonstrated experience in geotechnical site investigation and design, site characterization, soft soil engineering, foundations, seismic assessment, and construction support from tendering to inspections.
  • Proven experience in the types of analyses and design processes required by the Canadian Dam Association Dam Safety Guidelines and Practice Bulletins.
  • Leadership skills with a proven aptitude to mentor and develop junior engineers, designers and technicians.
  • Team focused with excellent interpersonal skills and understanding of multidisciplinary projects.
  • Client responsive with a history of successful business development.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communications skills.
  • Good working knowledge of specialized Geotechnical software and modeling tools (Geostudio Suite, Plaxis, etc).
  • Valid Class 5 drivers license
  • Ability to travel within Canada and Internationally on short term assignments as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated expertise in the Water Resources, Flood Control. Flood Protection and/or Hydropower sectors including proven project experience in design of foundations, earthfill embankment and water retaining structures, temporary shafts, support systems for temporary excavations, open cut excavations, general earth works and design of temporary/permanent dewatering systems. 
  • Previous consulting engineering experience.
  • Industry recognized expertise in a field or specialization.
  • Post graduate education (M.Sc., M.Eng. or equivalent).
  • Registered, or eligible to be registered, and licensed to practice as a Professional Engineer in the State of North Dakota, USA.
  • Ability to travel within Canada and Internationally on long term assignments.
